mix and match cam towers
« on: March 05, 2012, 06:35:33 PM »
I started tearing down my K2 engine for rebuilding and found that I had 1 older style and 1 newer style cam tower (with the 4 extra bolts in the rocker shafts).
Is it Ok to reassemble like this or should I get matching parts?
Perhaps my head is not a 72 like the case/bottom end.

OH OH another cam tower thread. Was the engine running when you took it apart and what was the reason for the rebuild ? At this point if the engine was running there is a good chance that the cam and other friction parts have bedded in and if everthing passes a good inspection than it may be best to run what you have rather than introducing new parts that may not be as compatible.

By all accounts,(except one! :P :P) you can just put it back together and leave those extra bolts out. I would think you can put it back together as you found it with no problems as well, as the bolts are the only difference, and are there on later models to quiet things down so you don't sound like Mom's Singer Goldentouch!

Rebuilt many siezures just replacing the damaged bits---not often both towers go at the same time
