Removing Shock Covers CB550
« on: March 14, 2012, 08:19:15 PM »
Can you take the chrome covers off the CB550 rear shocks and still use them? Or are they an integral part of the shock?

Thanks,

Yes but it's a pain without the correct tools and with out those tools it will probably take you and someone else to give you a hand. With the shock off and setting upright on the floor, with a really strong grip grab that chrome spring cover and put all your weight into it pushing it down. This will compress the spring and release the retainer that's wedged at the top between the cover and the top of the shock absorber. I can't remember if the retainer on mine is a 1 piece "C" type wedge or a 2 piece wedge but this is where having someone else to give you a hand becomes useful because they can pull the retainer out while your hands are busy gripping the cover with all your weight pushing down. You don't have to compress the spring completely, just enough to release that retainer and remember to grip only the cover when putting your weight into it other wise you'll compress the shock piston with it and unable to release the retainer. I'm horrible at explaining things but hopefully you'll get the idea.

My son and I have done a number of them by hand. A mechanics pic for the guy getting the retainers out and some good leather gloves for the guy doing the compressing helps. Make sure the shock adjuster setting is at the lowest.

Never tried it without the cover. I do not think it would work as the retainers are held in place by the edge of the shaft end and the edge of the cover.

You could probably either trim the cover so that you are only using the top most portion, though that may be flimsy.  You could also check local hardware stores for a beveled washer with similar dimensions as the top of the spring cover.

I think you can but I'm not sure. Once you have the cover and spring off, check and see how the retainer fits over the top of the spring.

It's easy to check int it? Let us know when you do.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

I have done it buy putting the shock mount in a vice and
compressing the spring enough to release the split retainer.
