My First CB750
« on: March 15, 2012, 07:50:19 PM »
Hey, everybody. I bought a 71 CB750 recently and have been reading the forums a whole lot as I am rebuilding the top end of the motor. This is a great forum and resource for knowledge! I'm not quite halfway finished with the rebuild, but here is what the bike looks like when it is assembled:

I always liked that color-for some reason it was not all that popular back in the day, most people bought red ;).  Out of curiousity, why did you rebuild the top end?  Welcome, have you downloaded the manual from this site?  Lots of smart people so as questions...Larry

Thanks for the compliments on the bike! I am excited to get this thing back together with some light restoration and back on the road again.

Larry, I am rebuilding the top end because I was leaking a lot of oil. So far, most of the engine components look to be in great shape (the bike has 23,000 mi.), so I am hoping that replacing all the gaskets, seals, and related rubber parts will do the trick. I am also under the impression that I should replace all the dowel pins. Do any of you know some tricks for coaxing dowel pins that seem stuck? Also, I had a nightmare of a time removing gasket residue from the bottom of the cylinders. I had to use a razor blade, and as careful as I was I still have a coupe of tiny nicks in the aluminum. I've noticed a lot of people saying gasket sealant clogs oil-ways, but should I use a drop of sealant at the nicked areas? Any other recommendations for taking care of surface imperfections on the gasket surfaces other than re-machining? In the past, when I replaced my girlfriend's clutch I had similar difficulty with the clutch cover gasket, but the couple of small scratches didn't produce any leaking. I am hoping for similar luck...

edit: Oh, and I do have a printed version of the manual for my engine.

The small nicks should not cause any problem, as long as they are very minor. Use a heat gun on the area surrounding the knock pins, then grab them with pliers and twist, hopefully you'll be able to pop them out. I always reuse them if in good condition...Larry

Welcome. I saw that bike on e-bay. Does the guy you bought it from belong here? Ive seen lots of bikes for sale on that deck I think. Looks like a good bike!

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

I don't know if the seller is on these forums. His name was Steve.

I have been whittling away at the rebuild for the past two weeks between work and school. I'm excited to get everything back together and fire it up.

Everything I have removed looks to be in great shape with little evidence of wear. I will compare everything recommended in the manual to serviceable wear limits, but I anticipate getting by with replacing all the seals/gaskets and lapping the valves prior to reassembly.
