Rewelding my own cam...
« on: March 16, 2012, 07:06:53 AM »
Hey guys, I have an old triumph engine I am restoring (http://trw500.blogspot.com/) And have significant wear on the cam. I am not up for paying megacam for a regrind and am thinking of adding some filler to the lobes and grinding them back to spec. Specifically I am wondering about the appropriate composite metal I should as filler. Would standard ER70/80 tig rod be sufficient, or is there something more appropriate out there?

Wouldn't the cam need hardened or something after welding?
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

That would not be hard enough. Use Stellite hard facing electrodes, and remove the flux for TIG welding. The TIG process will keep the heat down.
Then just do the grinding and polishing.

Thanx for all the replies.

Unless I find a used cam that is in better condition that mine is, I am planning on doing this myself. My plan is to make a  key that has the correct profile for the lobes, and use that as a gauge. The damage is not much prolly less than 1/16" grooves.

Keep in mind this bike only puts out about 15hp, so its no beast.
