Gasket?  Are talking about the copper exhaust gaskets at the head?
I meant the gasket seal around the head pipe to the muffler joint.

Uhhh... There's a gasket supposed to be there? Or do you mean the clamp assembly?

there's a gasket under that clamp so you can have a sealed exhaust system for better all-around performance;when the gasket in there leaks it leans out you're jetting a bit.

I walked away in frustration last night.  I got the bike all back together and tried to fire it up but got nothing.  I checked spark, that was good, I turned both carb bowl drain screws until a drop of gas came out.  I cranked it til the battery died.  I pulled plug 1 again and cleaned it with a wire brush and sat there for 5 minutes debating what to do... go home or stay and get it going.  I decided to stay so I went down to my car and got my jump starter box and hooked it to the bike.  I cranked it til it fired up, played with the idle screw a bit and was thinking it sounded funny.  I touched pipe 1 hot already, pipe 2 cold....  I buttoned it all up, put my tools away and went home.  On my way home the little bulb over my head came on.... I only cleaned one plug!!

I'm hoping it's that easy.  I'm taking in a '80CB750F today and I'd like to have this bike rolled over into the"finished"area before the customer bike shows up.

I hope it may be something as simple as a clogged pilot jet, dirty or shorted points contact or disconnected wire..

I cleaned the other plug and fired it up but its the same.  Im getting spark and there is gas in the bowl.  Its either mis-timed or the #2 carb is seriously clogged.  I revved it to 5k anf held her there for about 3 minutes, still noe heat on #2.
I have to go pick up the 750SS now so I'll come back to this later.  I'm not going to start on the customer bike til I get this sorted.  I'll start with timing and if that doesnt do it I'll look at the carbs.
Thanks for sticking with me on this thread grcamna.  A little outside interest goes a long way.

It only had about half a gallon of gas in the tank.  Put in a whole gallon.... Boom runs great.

That's an excellent fix...I love it when they turn out to be something easy like that and it'll sure keep you from having to "bleed when you build that".. ;D as far as "going on a hunt for the culprit", you know ?

The more tools I buy the less I bleed.  I'm gonna pull it out tomorrow for Bike Night tomorrow.  I still have a few things to tweak but she's lookin pretty sweet so in gonna run it for a few weeks.
Meanwhile I have a new project to keep me out of trouble.....

I ordered a new 100/90-18 Kenda Challenger today. I'll get a new tube and rim band.  I'm either going to buy new spokes or take the rust off of the existing spokes and paint them with some high grade clear.
I have a 5" bench grinder from 196? that spins like 3500 rpm or less and I put a super fine stainless steel wire wheel in it.  It does a real nice job cleaning surface rust off if parts without eating into the part.

I think the spokes would look nice sprayed with Duplicolor "Chrome" once you remove them one by one to polish them.

Got her out tonight. I have no charging system, and it's kinda mushy feeling, I was able to check the stator and it checks out.  I metered across the battery and got 12.2 at idle, headlight on, the manual says it should climb to 12.6 at 2,100rpm and should rise to 14.8 at 5,000rpm.  At 8,000 it was 12.8 again headlight was on.  It was failing to charge last year too.

Clean up all the battery box attachment points and make them metal to metal and the same thing w/ the rectifier & clean as many ground connections as you think it needs to get a nice reading on you're meter.Test the rectifier w/ a battery powered continuity tester.

I might have to let her be what she is until I get the 750f done.... plus I'm leaving Saturday for almost 3 weeks.  If I get a sizable chunk of the customer bike done I'll dig into this one.... The good news is I really don't go far.

With a fresh battery and GAS FROM THIS YEAR she runs pretty well. Yes I had gas in it from October. I'm gonna run it like it is and use the battery tender to keep her fresh until I get back from my road trip.

I bought a set of spokes from eBay, used and the listing says the finish is worn off.  The listing did a good job of describing them and even states that the two positions different lengths.  For $10.99 and free shipping you cant beat it.  My time cleaning them up is worth way more than $10.99.

I'm considering soaking the spokes in acetone, wiping them with a paper towel or t-shirt and dipping them in clear enamel one at a time then hanging them up to dry.  I do like the duplicolor chrome idea however.
