What are the nastiest carbs you've brought back to life?
« on: March 21, 2012, 07:43:18 AM »
I found a set of carbs that (externally) wasn't in terrible condition and figured I'd clean 'em up. Popped the bowls off, and this was probably the worst of them. What are the worst you've saved? Before and after pix please! I'll post after pics when I get home tonite and pull it out of the dip.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

Sorry no pics but for me it was the cb500 carbs I first put on my 550 when I first got it running again 2 years ago. Slides were froze, floats were stuck and each float bowl had about a teaspoon full of 20+ year old gas that was the consistency of cold molasses and stunk so bad that the varnished gas smell permeated my nose for a week. I had to soak them in carb dip first to get the heavy stuff off then boil them in water to loosen the slides and floats enough to remove them then back into a fresh can of carb cleaner again. Took me 2 weeks to clean them up.

That is why you need to get the real carb dunk if you want to save those. As a restorer/picker I see those Carmel apple carbs a lot.I respect the guys that want to use the aerosol cans but sometimes, which is me,for the first big one you need to hit them hard with the good stuff. After that its easy to maintain with a milder regime once the bike is alive and well.   Looks like fun-dig in   ;)

The worst ones I found were on my current K3 project. The bad is the carbs were left with gas in since 1987. The good is the tank interior was spotless. Used my gunk dip cleaner and I did derack them. Was able to save the entire system. But I really had to take my time getting the float pins out without breaking the posts.
