Topic: What is it worth? Machinest addition.

Long story short I had a garage (Full of inherited tools from my late grandfather) that burned recently. Most of the stuff is gone for good, or "vanished" when the contractors showed up. I was able to get a couple boxes of his machinest stuff. He used to be a tool and dye maker. I dont have a firm grasp on what it is really worth and was wonder is anyone who is familiar could chime in on it....

Really hard to say, Chris. The local place I buy stuff from has a bin of small, used reams, like in the first pic, for $1 each. Another bin has larger reams for $2, and so on. I can get a new, HSS 3/4" standard length, 4 flute end mill for $11. The extended length end mills would probably cost more, but they don't stock them. The carbide tipped lathe bits go for $4-5 new.
BTW, are you going to meet Godzilla tomorrow?

 Scottly uses stuff like that..so do I.. its worth a lot more per piece "when we NEED it"...than "buy it to have it"

 Any tool chest wooden or metal, orc precision measuring stuff or inserts.. I call dibs...

It looks like a lot of high speed steel. Carbide is worth more, but hss is fine for most applications. I recently purchased two wooden machinest toolboxes full of reamers, taps, calipers, end mills, tool holders, carbide insets etc. for $300.  All of this stuff was u.s. made and in great shape. Used stuff isn't worth very much, but it's great if you have the equipment to run it and if the price is right.

I called my tool guy today, and asked him what he sold used end-mills for. He told me $1-$4, depending on material (HSS or carbide), size, and condition.

I've seen some of those end mill bits stuck in a part before, some neat catastrophic failures.

My friend brings some of those home over the years and sharpens them , or just uses the shanks for different purposes, seems like there may be a glut of that stuff in the neighborhood soon.

The fundy academy bought out the machine shop property . The Hitache cnc that he has worked on since it was new in 1980 will be auctioned off along with lathes, bridgeports, watre jets, optical comparitors, and everything else you would need to do anything or make anything. Hoping to bid on something.

I was thinking of doing a thread on the place if I could get photos.
