Computer/external hard drive question
« on: March 28, 2012, 05:26:26 AM »
I'm trying to back up my computer on an external HD (Seagate).
I've done this before and it worked fine. Now, it tells me "back up failed" and has an error log.

In that error log, among other things, are all my picture folders.....the thing I'm most interested in NOT losing!
After each folder name it gives me this message:

"Not Supported/File skipped (backup of operating system files and folders ( those that have both system and hidden attributes) is not supported)"

In fact, that's the message after most everything in the error log, including cookies, some music, desktop files, some Microsoft stuff that I don't know what it means, etc.

What does that mean? Are my pics not being saved?

I don't use a "back-up" utility, I just "copy" the folders and their contents to my external drive.  That way I have a complete mirror image of everything that can be looked at to confirm the back-up.

Understand that I'm far from a puter guru. I've vented recently here about losing all my stuff on an external hard drive. Can I suggest that maybe rather than run a 'backup' simply copy all your folders to the removable drive?
I think a real backup includes all sorts of system files etc that can make it very messy compared to a simple copy of all the files you really want to keep safe.
Just a thought, hope it helps.
Cheers.

Edit: It looks like I took too long to type this.
Last year I joined a support group for procrastinators.
We haven't met yet.

What OS are you using, Windows? Were you using the Windows backup utility or a third party application?

Just open up the Widows Explorer to view the contents of your drives.  You should be able to see both your Seagate drive and also the directories on your computer's hard drive where your files to be backed-up are located.  It is easiest if you open up the Explorer twice, once in one window to see the Seagate drive, and a second time to see and find your files.  Then, to copy from one to the other, just select the directories/files you are wanting to copy (i.e. highlight them by clicking your mouse on them, holding "shift" or Ctrl" key to select multiple files) and then drag them over to the Seagate drive where you drop them by releasing your mouse button.

That would depend, it could be skipping files if your using incremental settings. IE: the file already exists on the target drive.
HondanutRider has the right idea you'll need to check what's working.

Maybe right click and 'send to' will do it.

"Send To" only works if the desired destination is listed.

Ok...I'm a computer idiot, too. How do I "just copy" them?

Not so easy in Vista or 7.  All documents are kept in "Libraries", and are not accessible directly from the C drive.  But the Libraries are listed on the left when opening up the "Computer" icon, and the files are accessible from there.  And there are many ways to copy files.  I'm not a big fan of click and drag.  But after you highlight the files you want to copy, you can either hit "Control and C"(copy), go to the folder or drive you want the copies to be in and hit "Control and V"(paste).  Or, instead of the "Control C or V" thing, you can just right click on the highlighted files and select either Copy or Paste.  With click and drag, it's not easiest to have the two Explorer windows open, it's required.

And while we're in the "neighborhood", totally moving files is just as easy.  After you highlight the desired files, hit "Control and X"(cut), or right click and select "cut", and then "Control and V(paste) or right click and select "paste" as before.  And the difference is that "Copy" does just that, makes a copy that you now have in two places, whereas "Cut" moves your one and only file from one place to another.

That'll be 5 cents, please.
Go metric, every inch of the way!
