Insurance question...
« on: April 05, 2012, 05:50:15 AM »
A friend of mine has desided to get into motorcycling (a decision I highly encourage). She's all signed up fr a safety course and has even found a bike she wants to buy: A mid '00s Ninja 250.She is 30 years old and her insurnace company told her it would cost $1000 a year (she has a clean drving record, by the way).

I told her to shop around.

Any suggestions on good companies that y'all have dealt with that I could suggest to her?

I had Geico but just switched to Liberty Mutual. It freaked them out as they don't specialize in bikes, especially one registered as a "custom motorcyle", but I have all my cars, truck and home with them so maybe that helped. Cost me $100 for a whole year! ;D

I'm 21 and insurance on my 2010 ninja 250 is less than $300/ year through Progressive.  That is with comprehensive, collision, and higher than minimum coverages on everything.  I also have one accident on my record.  So I would definitely tell her to look into Progressive.

That sounds like non-USA insurance prices.  What kind of coverage was that quote for?

I've had horrible luck with progressive... I was on my wife's policy with them, the card said right on it "registered insured: Geoff Springer" ... when it came time to make a claim, they didn't cover it because I was "exempt from all coverages"!  WTF?  Her car is still #$%*ed up thanks to that!

I've been with Gieco for years, and after that we insured hers with them too.  Have made a few claims here and there and all were covered quickly and to my satisfaction.  I think for our 2 bikes we pay about 300 a year.

+1 on Progressive - at least for the rates.  Can't speak to the customer service, as we've never had a claim.  My 20 year old son, with atrocious driving record, on a Honda 650 dual-sport, pays less than $100 a year for decent (100k?)liability only.  No coverage on the bike itself, since it's only a $1500 bike.

$1000 a year on a $2000 bike?  Sounds like there must be full coverage, collision, etc etc.  On a cheap bike like that, go for liability only.

If there's a lien, full coverage is required, first time rider will be asspensive!

We pay a bit more than a lot of you cuz we have comprehensive on both and we live in a hi risk area.

I avoid riding in town here, if at all possible!  I live close enough to the edge of the city, that we can be in the twisties in about 5 minutes.  Yes, we planned it that way.   ;)
