removed oil pan...

wow there's a lot of metal bits down there.  i knew the camchain had done a number on the guide - but i was suprised at how much metal shavings were collected in this engine. i suppose a lot of shavings from the cam vs. valve towers battle ended up down there as well.

i'm glad i took the pan off - still haven't found the piston rod clip, but the screen for the oil pump is torn and there's metal all over the place.

what's the best way to flush this out? i figure i need to set up some method of spraying it down with oil and draining that off.

Seems to be a reoccuring theme, metal in the oil....  I found the same thing two days ago and I am trying to find out the cause.  have you determined your problem?

well the engine is apart because the cam siezed against the journal bearings in the valve towers... so that's surely a source of metal shavings. the cam chain was also very loose and is another source.  the rest is likely the result of the 75000 kms on it.

Hi,
What did the inside of your oil filter housing look like? Was the filter "heavy"? Can you look into the outlet  passage from the filter and see any metal?
If enough metal/crud got in the filter and plugged it the valve in the filter housing bolt will open and bypass the filter. This will put anything that would be trapped by the filter directly into the oil system. When this happens it usually plugs the oil to the cam. Be sure to flush out the oil passages.

Most common cause of alluminium in the oil is the cam chain rattling sideways and grouving the block---let it go far enough and you will get a hole and oil leak!

there's defiantely some grooving in the block from the cam chain... it didn't leak before it siezed though, so i'm not overly concerned about that.  i do want to get it cleaned out and be sure my oil passages are good and clear before i bolt it all back together.

the oil filter housing and filter itself looked fairly normal when i took it out (was obvious the oil needed a change - bad valve stem seals will blacken the oil pretty quick) - was really quite suprised to see all that loose metal in and around the pan (and the torn oil pump screen wasn't a welcome sight either).

I would completely strip the engine and clean everything. I use a gun cleaning kit and Carb cleaner spray by the case.
