oil on the spark plugs
« on: April 18, 2012, 12:19:12 PM »
I can't get a spark on my 1974 cb550.  got it a few weeks ago and it was running strong if a little rough.  It was smoking a little upon star-up.  Then it was smoking a lot, and wouldn't idle with the choke off.  Then it wouldn't idle at all.  Now it won't start. I removed the spark plugs, and they seemed oil-fouled.  They were definitely wet, and the liquid seemed black-to-amber and not gassy-smelling.  I cleaned them, and sprayed sea-foam into the cylinders hoping to un-stick a piston ring if that was causing oil to burn. Put them back in and tried to crank it, but: nothing.  Pulled them back out after several kicks and they were all wet again. There's also weeping from the head gasket.  Feel like I kind of bought a lemon, but it was running so well when I got it.  :'(
Any hope for me?

Take the plugs out and clean them then lay them on the engine while they are connected to the HT leads. Kick the bike over and see if you get a strong spark. The first step in fault finding.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

You could get a fresh set of plugs for the test.
75' CB400F/'bunch o' parts' & 81' CB125S modded to a 'CB200S'
I love the small ones too !
Do your BEST...nobody can take that away from you.
