Allen Bolts and tappet cover
« on: April 20, 2012, 11:27:10 am »
When rebuilding my CB500 I desided to replace the cam cover JIS screws with allen bolts. Went great til I got to the tappet covers. There is interference with the bolts and some of the covers. Has anyone else run into this? Should I get the file out and reshape the head of the allen bolts to give some room for the tappet covers?

Yep. I just learned to take the tappet cover off first before the allen bolt. If I knew someone with a lathe I would have them turn down the heads on the allen bolts a C-hair. But for now I deal with it.

Maybe chuck them up in a drill motor and put a file on the head. You could put double nuts on first to save the threads.

If those are stainless you can get away with turning them down. the Cad plated ones will rust once the plating is removed.

That's what I did too on my 500 rebuild.. I sent the guy I bought them from on ebay a message to let him know this was an issue, and he replied that he'd sold "hundreds" of these kits and never had a complaint. Not likely!
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

I got my set of stainless screws off ebay as well and have the same problem. On my 550 it only effects the exh tappet covers and the interference is only when trying to install or remove the tappet cover with the stainless allen screw already tightened. If the tappet cover is tightened then the stainless allen screw threads in and tightens like it should. I basically have to wait to install the stainless screw until after I've tightened the tappet cover and then of course remove the stainless screw prior to removing the tappet cover. An inconvenience but not that big of a deal to me because those screws next to the exh tappet covers are easy to get to and still an improvement over the old rusty chewed up pan head screws that it originally had.
