Gunk/SolderSeal Carburetor Parts Cleaner???
« on: June 08, 2006, 04:24:34 PM »
This is the stiuff that Advance Auto sells -

http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?mfrcode=RAD&mfrpartnumber=CC3K

Comes in a 1-gal pail w/parts tray. I thought I read somewhere here how to remove deep varnished deposits. But I can't find it...

The process went something like: Dilute 4 to 1 or 2 to 1 for really bad carbs; place on burner and bring almost to a boil; immerse carb fully and let work for 2 - 3 hours; then spray off with spray-on carb cleaner.

But I'm not sure this is correct...

Does anyone who has done this have a detailed process they could share???

One of my carb bowls looks like it is full of cottage cheese...and they're all full of varnish...

BTW: No Yamaha dealers in my area anymore...

I've personally used the GUNK carb cleaner. It's nasty stuff, but it works great. You don't need to heat it or anything, just let the carb parts soak for a couple hours and flush them with clean water, then blow them out dry with compressed air. If they still have crap in them, soak them again. Worked great for me.

Haven't used it in years but, the product name has been around for years (since
back in the 50's for sure). It's definitely not a fly-by-night product. And it had a pretty stout
smell back then too!!                               Later on, Bill

Thanks for the encouragement! I'll try it this weekend, one carb body at a time.

Those instructions I had partly remembered were from the FAQ and were for Yamaha carb cleaner, so I'll try not heating it. My Yamaha dealer went out of business some years back; no reason given....That does explain why there are so few Yams around...(I haven't seen any lately)...

Gunk is also advertised as being environmentally-friendly...

Well, I soaked my best looking carb for 3 hours...didn't do as well as I'd hoped...had to wire brush (brass wire tooth brush) most of the undisolved varnish off...and after rinsing with water and blowing out, there are still white deposits in the body cavity...

Checked my phone book...There is a Yamaha dealer about an hour and a half from me...I'll try him next week and see if he has any of that yamaha Carb Cleaner...How much do you think I need??? About three quarts???

I found I needed just a bit more than one (guess that's two  ;)). I separated the carb bodies and found a smaller sized coffee can that would accommodate one body and its various innards.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I believe the white deposits are oxidized aluminum. Some carbs I've worked on had so much aluminum corroded away, that cleaning them actually left 6 holes in the bowl! (JB Weld works great for fixing those!) I recommend using caution when removing the deposits. The rough surface left behind may also cause problems sealing the carb.

I left the carb body in the Gunk all day today; 6:00am to 5:00pm...Came out much better...Rinsed everything off and started to put it back together...found out the Keysler carb kit has no bowl drain o-ring!!! And the bowl o-ring is round, and won't stay in the groove...  :(

I also need the "T" o-rings, it seems to use 4 on each "T"...Maybe I'll try that Harbor Freight Metric O-Ring kit...
