tire question
« on: April 23, 2012, 07:15:14 PM »
my son is building a 79 Honda cm400t he is on a very tight budget he needs a rear tire tire and found a low cc tire does anyone know about these he will be using it as a everyday commuter about 30 miles round trip they offer pirelli,michelin,dunlop,and bridgestone tires. they are at least name brand and they have the exact size he needs at half the cost.so is there any difference in them than a regular tire

OH...,OK, I would think it's meant for low torque to the contact patch;I would guess they are made from very cheap rubber...? I know from experience that I've gotten older model(90's)Chen Shin's basic tires into some Real rough scrapes with more braking then they could handle and they broke traction and slid uncontrollably on me.
Scary  :o ::)

+1 - never heard of low cc tire. Tires are relatively cheap, do you really want to skimp on this? What size does he need?

well i found out what they are a low or small cc rated for certain amount of speeds. i told him that i a tire is not something you want to skimp on. i do not see him doing 0ver 60mpnh on this bike and he will never take it on the highway. some of the tires are rated at 75mph 93mph and the highest being 112mph. so as long as he doesn't get up to 115mph i guess he'll be okay. at least they are some name brand tires he said a dunlop was cheaper at the small cc level than the other higher cc levels for the same size and he needs a 120 16

120/90-16 is not a common size. If he goes with a 110/90-16, here is one for $45, pretty reasonable. It is less than a half inch narrower and may be closer to the original size for that bike (my 750 has a 120/90-18 on it).

when it comes to tires i follow the mantra i've heard from many experienced riders:  "tires are the only thing between you and the road"

i'll spend a few extra bucks to stay good-looking.
