Best method to align T-mark on points assembly???
« on: June 09, 2006, 10:26:26 AM »
Last night as I was trying to check my tappet clearances I used the kickstarter to advance the points assembly to the proper T-marks.  Except that I had trouble getting a perfect alignment, I would often go too far past the mark and have to start over again.  There has got to be an easier way... isn't there?

You can use a ratchet with the appropriate socket on the end of the crank. The trick with the kickstarter is not to use full throws in order to get the engine turned over. Push down on the kickstarter until you reach resistance, let it up an inch or so and 'tap' it downwards to move in small increments.  The ratchet is the easier route, however,  ;)

If your bike still has a center stand use it.  Put the trans in top gear and use the rear wheel movement to get you mark aligned.

Or, while all the spark plugs are removed during the tune up, put a big wrench on that nut on the end of the crankshaft.
