Topic: Cleaning out the gas tank question

The WD-40's product safety sheet makes it look to be pretty mild with no breathing or contact limitations.  That plus the promise that it doesn't hurt paint is why I was asking.  We've had members send their newly cleaned tanks off to the professional painters and a month or so later get a beautifully done tank back that had rusted inside while there.   If this product does what it says it could save both nice original paint and the occasional new paint job from disaster.

+1 Don..I wouldn't mind using it if that's the case;I'd hate to foul up my present paint on my Honda as Guns_Up I imagine wouldn't either.

I'm. Stripping a cx500 tank failed liner with acetone and the acetone as it heats up in the tank it expands an it comes out the cap vent and the tank is made so it leaks forward and down both sides if the tank front seams.  I figure I will have to refinish the tank as the acetone will eat through most paints. Then I have to get the rust out of the tank before recoating it.  Then I can refinish the tank.

I'm sorry you lost your paint job RAFster & hope you can get the inside as nice and clean as a new tank.

As I mentioned earlier I did my '74 CB550 gas tank that was in very bad condition through the electrolysis method and it worked incredibly well, and was cheap and easy.  The only problem I had was after a few days some rust started showing up again.  Have you looked into any methods of lining the tank once you removed the rust?  I think I may have to do this.  If you have any specific questions about electrolysis let me know I did a ton of research.  Make sure you are in a well ventilated area if/when you do it.
