Found one but dont know a ton about them
Do they have the same pain in the butt carbs as on the other V4s?
anything major to look out for?
tires really impossible to find?

What to pay?
how awesome are they?

Not sure about the US market but the last couple of models had the gear driven cams, much better than the earlier models. Google will help you out with any important info, start by searching what years they were built and go from there...

I like them a lot although a lot of people don't....

You should be able to find some info on VFRDiscussion.com. Lots of Honda V4 love there. From what little I've learned they're a bit heavy but the motor sounds great, as most all Honda V4's do.

Is it an 85' or 86' ? If it's been really well maintained w/ the inside of the tank done,valves,carbs,etc. well taken care of..lets say owned by a M/C mechanic and in stock trim, I think $2200 + wouldn't be out of line... But if just "kept running" w/o the regular things that it should have had(it's really just a pain to "bring it back" to 100% fine tuned cond.;these will Last a Long time w/ the gear drive cams) try to offer much less.They have an electric fuel pump and the tank tends to get a some rust in it and pump it through the carbs..as usual.It looks like it's been kept indoors and may not have much rust in the tank though.
The best thing to do if you get it is find a nice 17" front wheel and drop the tree's down a hair to compensate.It's best w/ 17" both front & rear so you can fit a pair of decent radial tires to lighten the "feel" of the handling on this BIG bike.
I believe once it's been totally fine tuned and then taken regular good care of, this bike will run for MANY miles indeed and be Real smooth for long distance rides.
I'd LOVE to have it !

it wouldn't take me long to bring it to 100% smooth operation and take it from here to the West Coast & back.

If it's one of the geared cam versions, don't be surprised if it doesn't need any valve adjustment. To compare, the closely related VFR750 series bikes usually don't need them. In fact, from my readings on VFR Discussion, I've never ran across one that needed one, even after 75K miles

It can be an intensive job, so if it were me, I'd read up on that particular subject for this bike. If it hasn't been done it would be a good bargaining chip if the owner isn't so aware, even if it doesn't need it.

I know that this VF1000R has screw type adjusters that need adjustment every 8000 miles just like the 1st generation VFR750F & VFR700F from 86' & 87'. The 2nd generation VFR's are the ones w/ valve shims that go a LONG way w/o needing valve adjustment's. This is a VERY Nice bike; I love how much protection that O.E. Fairing gives you

If I had the $ to get this one I'd jump on it.

grcamna2 is right the VF in the designation means it is the earlier valve type where the VFR is the second generation this is true for all of the v4 hondas even the Magna's.

This VF1000R has the exact same technical improvements as the 1986' 1st gen. VFR750F especially in the camshaft area which was such a pain back in the days of the original VF750F Interceptors.I'd say it's bulletproof and the valve adjustments always took me about 2 hrs. maximum..but that was on my own bike and I liked matching all of them to Exactly the same tolerance..which took some extra time.That time included the carb. synch.

It weighs 608 pounds w/ fluids. Swoopiest and most desirable bike back in 1985 but too heavy for any serious road scratching. Very collectable.

I think that VF1000R is good for smooth long distance sport touring..,just like a Bigger version of the mid 90's VFR's.

I bought an 86 model brand new (still in the crate) in 1991. It is the only bike I have ever bought new. I rode it for three years as my main transportation and put about 42K miles on it. I checked the valves at around 10K as I recall and they were perfect. I never checked them again and I never synced the carbs once. It started and ran flawlessly every day. I did some long trips on it but it would not be my bike of choice for that. It would pull a hill like crazy. The air shock was a piece of crap and I never could get rid of the headshake. I finally had the dealer look at it under warranty and they replaced the steering head bearings but it didn't help. I tried adjusting the preload but that didn't help either. Even so, I loved the handling. I prefer a heavy bike so this thing was right up my alley. It was all stock except I had the wheels powdercoated white and it had soft luggage and a tank bag. I also installed firmer fork springs. It would eat rear tires in about 5K miles but I was a bit ham fisted back then. A front tire would last through two rears. I think I did brakes on it about three times and I replaced the chain and sprockets at around 25K. I should have never sold it.

The fairing offered decent protection for my legs but I would say that was about it. My hands would freeze as the fairing offered practically no coverage for them. It knocked the wind off my chest a little when I was on the highway but that was about it. If winter riding is your bag (as it is for me) then I would recommend a sport tourer of some sort. I have a Kawasaki Concours right now but I've had a few others (BMW etc.) previous to that and they have all been FAR superior to the the VF1000R for winter riding. I run heated grips and an electric vest with my Concours and I am always comfy. Besides the wind protection advantage, the ergonomics are in a whole different league from the VF1000R. It only took about 50 miles on the highway before I was squirming around on the seat and the legroom was horrible.

I enjoyed the hell out of my VF1000R but if you are looking for a bike for winter riding I would look elsewhere.

The early VF 750's suffered that affliction...... Not too sure about the 1000's though....

As I recall that was on the early 750s. I certainly never had any sign of trouble from my 1000.

G'Day William, yep, almost winter here, so I'm putting my new "Winter" bike on the road. All going well, I'll get my "Red Plate" (club registration) for my BMW R100RS today, so I'll be able to ride warm and dry behind that big fairing through the colder, wetter months.
