really stupid master cylinder question..... with pics
« on: May 14, 2012, 11:54:05 am »
ok i thought i put together the master cylinder correctly but i guess i didnt so i need clarification.....

the kit i got did not come with directions

the reason i posted this next pic is that the kit made me put on this rubber thing on the piston. is it facing the right way?

now how do i put this thing together?

i believe the spring goes in first but i dont know which end goes in the big side or the little side first?

then i think its the smaller rubber piece?

the the piston with the bigger end that has holes and a weird flower piece of metal that is connected to the piston thing on the end

then the big washer i forgot to add in the picture then the c ring thing

then the rubber boot with the other retaining clip thing

spring (which end first)> rubber thing?> piston> washer> c ring thing> rubber boot> other retaining clip.......

In the top picture, take that long spring and turn it 180 degrees.  That rubber cap thing near the top center of the photo goes on the small end of that spring and butts up against that "flower." Your piston is assembled right.  Then washer, retaining clip, boot and wire clip

Whenever you take mechanical things apart ALWAYS take notice of how they came apart, and draw a little sketch or take a photo especially if you will be waiting for parts.

It is just standard practice.
A good mechanic lays things on a table in the order that it came apart and with a particular side facing up etc.,.

ya i usually have a digital camera and take pics step by step. i did have the MC done but it didnt work

also a put the mc back together and after some pumping nothing came out the right end and it started leaking by the lever....

could the gasket on the piston be backwards?

when u pump the brake lever the brake fluid should shoot out shouldnt it?

I'm pretty certain your piston is ok.  I had a hard time bleeding mine too.  My tactic was to pump slowly.  I had little bubbles come out of the small hole in the M/C for a little before it firmed up.  Once it firms up, it will shoot out and blast you right in the face if you're not careful.  Leaking past the lever is troublesome though.  Are you sure it's not just running down from the brake line connection?

I just rebuilt my 750 MC and had the same leaking problem at the lever hinge.  Worried that I assembled it wrong I scoured these forums.  One thing I learned was that people recommended not pulling the brake lever all the way down when you're bleeding the line.  Apparently this can cause the leaking, possibly due to the alignment of the reservoir holes with the piston seal.

So I started pulling only about halfway and after a few minutes I started to feel pressure.  If memory serves, the process was something like this:  with bleeder open pump the lever a bunch of times until you see fluid leaving bleeder.  Then close bleeder and pump 4-5 more times, them open bleeder and more fluid should immediately leave the bleeder.  Then repeat this last part (close bleeder, pump 4-5 times, open) a few times.  You should start to feel pressure.  Each time you pump the handle only go half way.  Once the pressure builds, you shouldn't see any leaking at the lever.

Worked for me.
