I need a M8 x 1.25 thread chaser. They are expensive and I don't have the extra cash to spend. Does anyone have a chaser I can borrow? I will pay for shipping both ways of course.

I need to clean out my upper engine case where the APE cylinder studs get installed. I was having head gasket issues and tracked it down to a couple studs not installed all the way due to crap in the threads. I have read to use a thread chaser not a tap to clean the threads. I can make a DIY thread chaser out of a bolt but I would rather use a correct one.

You may hear a lot of people say just use the tap. Chasers are nice if you have them, I guess. I thiught I was pretty modern when I got taps.

A tap cuts thread and removes material. A thread chaser will just clean up the threads and remove gunk.

Never seen an internal thread chaser only external ones! Just use a plug tap and keep backing it off when clearing the "Gunk" ( I beliece theis is similar to Cr*p)

Branden, stay in touch. I'm off Wednesday (but I have a ride date) in case you don't get one sent to you beforehand. I'd need to get a small padded envelope however and my time is very tight. It would be Sunday after that.

Gotta say thread chasers are an expense worth investing in if you're doing an entire bike! I've chased all internals and many externals. Got my kit from Sears. They are hard to find!

I am not seeing the problem of using the tap , instead of the chaser
UNLESS it is a ROLLED thread, and the crests of the tap may then introduce stress risers.. you would be able to tell if the tap starts cutting, if it does not.. should be fine...

they have 2, 3 , or 4 flutes, and sometimes more cut into then, this is where the chip goues when cutting the thread in the first place. Grease the tap, run it in, debris should stasy in the grease..

Tap will only cut more if tap is bigger than original, entering at wrong anlgle or being thrust sideways,or if it encounters a bruised area..which it will clean up. If you use a tap of a different class of fit , then it may shave a slihght bit off,
Genearlly cheap taps are a poor class of fit. What did you mean by expensive? 12-40 bux is the norm.. how much are your cases worth if you ruin the stud holes ?

That's a different instrument and joke altogether. Hey I play the stereo too... Thanks for that info Frank. Would a tap cut deeper than a chaser perhaps since the chaser only cuts buggered threads and doesn't cut the bottom out?

The kit I got from Sears is pretty complete. SAE and metric. Male and female. Different thread sizes for some of the sizes. Thinking I paid close to $100 for that Craftsman quality. One and done purchase. Plus it has that always nice Craftsman case

I'll try to get some info and a pix when I'm back at home and have an opportunity.

Frankly if it's just crud then use a brass pipe cleaner type brush and screw it into the threaded holes. They are cheap at harbor freight.

For something as small as M8 size I don't see a problem with using a tap as a chaser. Put a bit of grease on it and go easy back and forth by hand until you need to use the handle. If it were a 12 or 14 like a spark plug hole then yes a chaser is the way to go.

How can you use a tap? Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but aren't a tap and chaser are completely different?. A tap would be used if you, for instance, drill a hole and need to create threads inside. A chaser is totally opposite. Picture a nut with cutting threads on the inside. You would use it in a case where maybe a bolt has damaged threads and you need to repair them. The chaser would spin onto the bolt and clean up the the bad threads as it was spun.

Wouldn't that be considered a 'die'? As in cheap assed Harbor Freight Tap and Die set.
