'80 CB650 Bobber project
« on: May 18, 2012, 03:14:59 pm »
Picked up a fairly unmolested 1980 CB650 for $600. She was leaking gas everywhere and the tires were bald, but it only had 15k on it.

Went through the carbs, cleaned them out, put an inline filter on for now (will be replacing the tank) rejetted to 120 mains, 42 slows and set the air mixture screws to 2 turns out. Then I pulled the stock air box out and installed two K&N filters. Runs great!

Now I can start tearing it down...I have a pretty cool idea for the rear suspension. I bought a mono shock from a Ninja 600 because the spring is rated to be used without a linkage and I'm going to try to hide the shock as best I can under the seat.

Making some progress...

Got my headers wrapped. Used exactly 50'. Picked it up from a guy named "turboworks" on e-bay for $27 shipped.

Also I ordered some spokes from  buchanan spokes to lace a 16" rear Harley rim to my Honda hub. They were $$$ but it's the only way I can run a 16" whitewall tire.

I'll keep updating with photos...

Welcome!  Sounds like we are of the same mind, you and I.  I'm in the process of chopping an '80 CB650 myself.  That one'll get finished when I'm done with my wife's '80 CB650C.  Take TONS of pictures and post 'em here... we love it!  I'll be keeping an eye on your progress, especiall with that monoshock conversion.  Nice buy for $600, too.

Made some more progress this weekend. Worry not, the frame will be reinforced/triangulated in this area when I am done.

Upper shock mount in place

Got some more done. Mocked up the swingarm with some cheap conduit. It's just a concept at this point but I really like the direction it's going.

Had to go a different route with the rear shock b/c it was way too stiff at that angle. This is still the trial and error / mock up phase but it gives you an idea of the direction I'm heading...

Got my rear 16" HD hub laced up too!

I like it... I have an 80 650C from CL for $450. I'm not sure which direction I'm going with it, more bobber or cafe??? anyway, mine had no airbox when I bought it so I have to run pods and it leaks pretty bad from the overflow on the #1 carb. how were you able to rejet yours and where did you purchase the jets? from the research I've done the slow jets are pressed in.

thanks,

rejetted to 120 mains, 42 slows and set the air mixture screws to 2 turns out. Got the jets from http://www.siriusconinc.com/ Costs about $60. Don't worry about the jets being pressed in, they twisted right out with some small vice grips.

Got my float bowl gaskets from this guy on E-bay... way cheaper than buying the real deals.

The overflow is probably from a stuck needle valve...

What style of Sporty tank did you use? Did you have to modify anything to get it on there? I am looking at a Frisco style tank for my 75' bobber but looking for other ideas too

It's an '86 Sportster 883 tank. I had to move the front tabs up on the tank to lower it down on the top tube and in the back I had to cut the tabs off and weld them further outboard a bit b/c the top tube widens out as it goes back. I had to tack two bolts sticking out horizontally from the frame in the back for the rear tabs to mount to. I will also have to move the rear mounts for the ignition coils down about an inch so the coils will clear the bottom of the tank.

For me it was worth the work b/c I'm really not a fan of the frisco look, but to each their own, that's what its all about.

Thanks for the comments so far! It's really coming along lately..I'll post some more pics soon.

I am a little nervous about the Frisco style sitting up too high but its doesn't appear to have to  be modified much at all. Figured I can run a bolt into the frame on the front and back to mount it. I found a reproduction Frisco style online for like $130 shipped. Like the look of yours. I am doing the red rims to but my build is on the cheap lol! Good luck!!

Finally got the rear suspension figured out. Mocking up the seat mounts next then pulling it all back apart to complete the welding. After that's done the next big project is making a battery tray under the swingarm.

Could you do me a favor and get some really clear shots on how you put all that together with the monoshock swingarm?  I'm having a hard time seeing how all that fits together under your seat.  To me it looks like a hardtail with a shock stuffed in there.  ???

You probably don't realize it but that's the best compliment anyone could give me! That's exactly what I wanted, the look of a hardtail with a functional suspension.

I still need to clean up some of the welds and add some gussets but these shots should give you a better idea of how it all works....
