Tank bag

I would like to get a smallish tank bag with a clear pocket for maps &/or GPS when needed.  My two concerns are for the tank, marring the paint, & the protruding chrome offset filler (CB500) that it may interfere with a flat mount.  What does everyone use or have tried?

My tank bag is pretty small, but it's all leather and uses magnets for mounting. As long as your magnets are strong enough, any bag should do, and not really be scratching the paint.

Scratching the tank should not be an issue with strapons or magnetics. I've used both extensively on several bikes. My biggest mistake ever was to set a magnetic bag on the side of the road as i had to make an adjustment. Some gravel embedded itself in the soft vinyl belly. Then i put it back on the bike. Under some really hard braking it skootched forward, the gravel acting as marbles, and scratched the tank.

Moral. Always clean off the bottom of the bag, assuming its off the bike at some time.

As to the filler cap, a strapon will sit on top of the cap better than a magnetic. You lose some interior room as the floor of the bag is pushed up. Other than that its fine.

As to which one to use, Google it. I've used RKA, Eclipse, Tourmaster and a few others. No recent purchases though. And the lineups change every season it seems.

I got a decent small one at Advance auto parts, it was sitting on an end cap display. Magnetic with a front and rear strap for safety. My bike (750F) has the gas cap door but I can fill it with the bag on.

i was thinking about buying one. i like it because its small and the whole top part is clear and waterproof to put a gps in it and all that jazz

I love tank bags and have used a few. Right now I have a Nelson Rig that is also my lunch bag for work. Its simple and works well. I also have a Joe Rocket Manta. Its kinda small for me but works ok for short day rides. Cortech makes some of the best tank bags IMO. Cycle Gear usually has a few to check out. For some reason tank bags (at least the cool ones) are hard to find deals on.


This is my favorite, Nelson Rigg



I use this and it works well



My next bag will be a Cortech
