Popcorn "butter" is pretty good, but my engine seized when I tried the popcorn itself.

I bite:)

I use Gastrol 20w50 or Valvoline 20w50 - local autozone have them on sale evry so often.

From what I understand - very little :) -  if the clutch works well you are fine.

You could ho full synthetic, but the motor would need gaskets replaced after a while.

Do the search here - enough information to give you severe headache.

Back when the CB750 was manufactured many brands of oil were only sold in straight weights ,there were no multi viscosity oils at that time.

in my 550 last season i put in Mobil 10w40 automotive oil, since the oil cap said "use 10w40".

i noticed some troubles shifting into N, and some hard shifting here and there, and stumbled across some thread on this forum that said that car oil is different than motorcycle oil and can cause this problem (i still can't rationalize anything except a higher viscosity keeping the clutch plates a fraction of an inch farther apart??)

anyways, this season i got a 10w40 mineral oil for motorcycles - not cheap, but not that expensive - BUT my shifting issue is no longer a problem.  so who knows.

that's my 2 cents.  pass me the popcorn and some 3D specs.

Modern (post 1980 or so) car oil has "stuff" in it that MC trans and clutches don't like. That's all you need to know, unless you want to discuss it.  ;)

You've experienced this. Stick with MC specific oils. Your choice as to flavor.

I am convinced enough to use MC Oils. I am not convined enough to fully explain it. Here is one of many Google hits on "why auto oils should not be used in MC"
http://blog.cycletrader.com/2012/04/passenger-car-motor-oils-and.html
I don't know that I agee with everything in the article. The use of the word "dangerous" in the title is over the top. Its not dangerous, just may cause symptoms in some bikes. Many get along fine with car oils. That goes from model to model and even within the same model, according to owners surveys (unscientific of course)

I've heard good reports on Rotella, I see Sir Funk is posting on that.

I sit in too much traffic and Hawaii is too hot to use 10w40, so I bumped it up to 20w50 and it works much better. I don't have trouble shifting into neutral with a hot engine, but I DO false neutrals more often. It's a tradeoff I can handle (except for the time when I was flogging it and over-revved by about 3000, and broke a couple tappet nuts/adjusters :P).

It's not hot in Hawaii, it's perfect. Low 80s everyday with a nice breeze.  I can't wait to go back!  My last time there I rented a Harley and road around Oahu with my wife.  That was a great day.

I'm not sure why anyone uses dual viscosity oil in a motorcycle.  Do you guys ride in real cold weather?

Compared to other vehicles, oil in cb has particularly hard life - covers engine AND transmission - that said it is important to keep the changing interval @ 1500 miles. On the end of the cycle the oil deteriorates fast. Thats my take on reading various sources.

My $0.02 only of course :)

I use Mobil Delvac light diesel truck engine oil.  I started to use it when I found out that it has the highest level of zinc allowed in modern engine oils.  Zinc, as discused in the article above, repairs micro scratches in your steel components, which should ultimately extend the service life of the equipment.  Most modern gas engine oils have very low zinc content because it is hard on catalytic converters and increases bad emissions over time as the catalytic converter is degraded.

The other two points in the article, common sump and slipping clutches, are non issues in my book.  The fact that our engines have a common sump for the transmission, clutch and engine (as opposed to a car that has a dry clutch, engine oil and transmission oil) is not a factor because we change our engine oil so often.  A transmission will likely break engine oil down faster than the internals of the engine, but replacing the oil before it is worthless will keep your engine and transmission lubricated well enough.  I have not experienced any clutch slippage on my bikes since I started using the Mobil Delvac synthetic diesel engine formula that was not attributable to worn clutch plates or significantly higher engine output!

Regarding oil leakage, I have not experienced leaks in my engines if they have new gaskets.  Old gastkets maybe, but only at the joints where old rubber gaskets have given up the ghost and where they were going to leak anyway.

Regarding transmission operation, I use 20W50 and don't seem to have any clunking or crappy shifting issues when the engine gets warm.  That is also why I use dual weight engine oil... to keep the transmission working well after the engine has warmed everything up.

I change engine oil every 3k or so.

Disclaimer, other oils might have higher zinc content than the Mobil Delvac, but I am used to using it and have had no problems with it... and Hondaman recommended it!
