throttle cable snapped. quick fix or solution? (nyc)
« on: May 31, 2012, 04:11:24 PM »
the pull cable snapped on my 76 550k throttle. It's parked in the city now and I want to get it fixed right away. I called two places and they said no one will have it and they'll have to order it. Monday is when it'll get here.

I'm looking for a quick/temporary solution that can get the thing working and get it home while I wait for the proper cable to come back.

Do you know if:
A: swap the push cable and put it in place of the pull?
B: find ANY throttle cable from any bike place and use that?
C: know a place in New York City that will have that cable on hand?

Thanks!

Not sure if it will work but. . . . . .
Swap the push cable and finagle a return spring on the carbs.  Should be good enough to get you home

Right hand on carb arm, left hand on bars and clutch, no front brake, ride the back streets.

I don't understand the purpose of the 'push' cable? You surely don't need it do you?

Both cables are pull, the idle return cable is a safety thing.  Since motorcycles are inherently unsafe anyway, many don't us it.

On the 750s you can change the position of closing cable on the wheel. Some have reported doing it.
The throttle may work backward. There are no quiet backstreets in NYC.

As a TEMPORARY fix I once had this happen... what I did was... you ready for this?  put the "push" cable end on the carbs where the pull is...  Now operate your throttle backwards (roll forward to accel)  *what you do to your bike is what you do to your bike... you asked for a temporary fix... this works in a pinch but if you do this, you accept all responsibility.

This will get you home if you are stranded but it does take some time to get used to

switch the cables.
That is the quick fix to a broken throttle cable.

Incidentally,
I actually prefer riding with the cables switched. I rocked that for many years.
