Modified DOHC to fit my SOHC...with pics
« on: June 07, 2012, 02:21:48 pm »
So I have always lamented my beat up stock exhaust on my 77 Super Sport. So I thought I would give the DOHC exhaust a try. I always heard they 'ran low' but thought I would give it a try anyway. So I got a deal on a Vance and Hines on EGay. After installation it looked like this...

Not bad, but after riding it around the block I found that it did not take much of a right turn to cause the exhuast to drag the asphalt. Not safe, so I decided to cut the SOB in two, and reweld at the angle I wanted. Mock up looked like this...

...and the finished product here..

Just thought I would post the pics. I know V&C and Kerker make an exhuast for the SOHC, but everytime I have seen them, the are $500 plus. I regularly see the DOHC pipes for <$300.

Remember, the orientation of the exhuast at the head is the same on the SOHC and DOHC (79-82??) so the header fits fine, its just the height that they run which is the issue. If you weld, or can get someone to weld, this might be a cheap[er] option.

That's a nice looking pipe. Wonder how a pipe bender would leave it? What year/size DOHC? Any fitment issues? You're on to something here!

No way to do it with a pipe bender. Here is the one I used...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VANCE-HINES-DRAG-RACE-PRO-PIPE-EXHAUST-SYSTEM-79-82-HONDA-CB750-NIGHTHAWK-/130699070055?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e6e458a67&vxp=mtr

So its 79-82. You can see in that first pick what it looks like mounted with no modifications. Fits the head fine, it just runs low. You have about 5" of clearance at the back end of the pipe

I have a stock DOHC exhaust that I have mocked up on my bike and it fits a little low. Mine is mocked up on a 76 750 thats got a 72 engine and uses later style exhaust clamps. I'm just waiting on some time to work on it and put the copper washers in place and it should seal up nicely. The pipes are a little blued but otherwise great and I got them for 60$ on craigslist. Try that for a SOHC exhaust.

I know no pics and it doesn't count but im 45 miles from my bike with the worst job ever so I have to disappoint

Thats no fault of that pipe, all sidewinders will scrape on what ever side they exit, they are a drag pipe, not a street pipe and are supposed to sit low....
