Yeah! Big sis got her MC license and needs a bike...
« on: June 09, 2012, 09:22:41 AM »
Yeah! Big sis got her MC license and needs a bike and she asked for my help in shopping for it!  :D
Her budget is $2,000 to $2,500-ish.

I feel I can ONLY recommend an SOHC4... like a 550. Am I wrong?

what about a newer honda like a hawk, rebel, shadow, something that's a Little smaller if she is a new rider or even a 350four
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

A 550 would be good, but a Honda 250 might be better.

How much experience does she have and is she of average size?

Here's a rebel in her price range, she may not like the style but go look at it and let her sit on it and see it it fits.

Thanks for the suggestions... will consider for sure.

She is fit and I don't think picking it up will be a problem.
Now... if she can learn to change the oil and truly enjoy it... :)

Nice bike and with porting you can blow away an unsuspecting 750.

At least that's what the magazine cover said.

My wife is inseam challenged, she just tried a 250 rebel and can flat foot it. Been talking about it ever since. After our daughters wedding is paid for I expect her to get one.

This is a very good consideration, imo.  Particularly good for a new rider to be able to flat foot it rather than tip toe.  Remember your legs need be longer when on an incline and stopped, to keep the bike upright.

Any SOHC4 she gets is going to be 30 years old or more, and will need work, even if only routine maintenance/restoration.  Who's going to do that?  Will she be riding alone?

Is she willing to do ANY work on the bike herself?  Or, is she going to be the operator only?

If you will be doing all the work on the bike, then get one you are familiar/comfortable with that fits her properly.

Cheers,

yeah, there lot's of cool twins and singles that are much simpler mechanically than a sohc4. ...smaller, lighter, easier to maintain...

Yesterday my bro and dad took her to look at a 95 Honda Magna 750...  ???
Yes ... she agrees... Too big and way too heavy for her!

Kudos to her for saying NO whilst being heavily badgered about what a great deal it is that shouldn't be passed up! (those guys.. wtf?  ::))

After a bit of research ... imho .. it really wasn't that great of a deal.  ;)

... of course .. thinking back now, it's no surprise. Anytime they've bought bikes for themselves.. it always had to be the fastest one available! ... Bro has two Ducatis and Dad has V-Max.
(Pops had a CB750 in '73 ;))

I agree with an old Rebel.  They're all over the place and easy to work on.  I know a woman who rode a 250 Rebel around a few years and just bought a 650 Shadow.

Might consider a CM400 or 450. My wife bought one a couple of years ago. It has a little more oomph for riding the interstates & more of the UJM style of seating. The best part is you can find an automatic version of them as well.

Hadn't even thought of that... I'll see if she's interested.
..
Found a bunch (see list above + a few more) Haven't picked any up yet... but soon.
Lots of great deals out there... none a "killer deal" so... no rush.
