Race Tach
« on: June 10, 2012, 01:55:37 PM »
I'm in need of a decent electronic tach. I've tried two different GSXR tachs and they just wave at me at high rpm. Scitsu is on the list though some aren't sold on them. Any good options? I just want to cover my tracks before I pull the trigger.

i would take the scitsu off that list brent , ok they are cheap but they are not very accurate and seem to die at the drop of a hat . if you must have one the ones with the external battery seem to last better .

Thanks Simon. That's the feedback I'm hearing about Scitsu too. Got a brand name?

I haven't installed the tach you send me bw, do you want it back?  I'll probably stay with a mechanical for now because of battery life issues.  That said a self powered tach sounds interesting.   Wonder how long it would take for the sidecar's vibration to kill it.

I'm surprised at that Simon I've used Scitsu for years and never had any issues providing you follow the battery instructions to the letter and the trigger wire is attached to the HT leads properly. Dawson Harmsworth who make them have even taken old tachos for me and changed the internals to go from a single to an inline four with different wasted spark etc. If you're not using mechanical tachos, I'd have no problems with Scitsu...

i use krober rev counters on the tz's and rotax 's , a bit more expensive but on the dyno they seem to be dead accurate .

simon ive bought loads of scitsu's off tony over the years.  ive got a couple from the 80's that still work ok ive also got a big box of broken ones that where only a year or so old . ive got none that are very accurate

I guess some people are just unlucky 42. I ran them on the CR and Benly for years with the built in battery and on the RS off the battery that was fitted for the aftermarket ignition, air shift and nitrous systems.
Like his lordship says, the after sales service is first class from Scitsu.

How about a Krober tachometer? I used them on both my Triumph and Honda drag bikes. They do several different models depending on the number of sparks generated per crankshaft revolution. I haven't got a link but if you try a Google search it should come up.

I've had this mini wired through my Dyna 2000. Running for years now with zero issues. It's small, but the lit red needle is easy to read, and it's very steady. Made in Canada, Brent ;)

Hey stranger good to see you Sean-man. I looked at those tachs and a mess of others. I've got feelers out there on some options. Thanks everyone for the experiences & info.

Re the Smiths.... I have asked two different UK suppliers for a recommendation on either Smiths, Stack, etc. and neither would answer with more than two words, but that's cool. TTR400 likes the Elliot but they've unfortunately gone out of business.

I'm leaning to the Kroeber/Pitsch unit as several guys have highly recommended them. I like the look of the Scitsu but there are just too many that have had negative issues.
