Amazing group of beautiful bikes to choose from, but I’ve spent many a mile chasing one of these beauties and it get’s my nod.

The story of my bike starts about 10 years ago when I was in high school. I was friends with a kid named Paul who had an awesome dad. What made his dad so awesome? He collected really cool vintage stuff. Jukeboxes, models, car magazines, cars, snowmobiles, etc. Thanks to Paul's Dad, I can say that I've ridden in a Citroen DS19. At one time he had a Jaguar mk IX, triumph TR3, two Porsche 356's, said Citroen, over 50 vintage snowmobiles, and probably more. Cool, right?

Paul's dad also collected bikes. To be honest I never knew how many bikes he had besides the three I had seen in his garage. It turns out he had around a dozen bikes in various states but all needing some work, not to mention plenty of spare parts.

Sadly, Paul's dad had a brain aneurysm while we were in high school. Luckily he survived but will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair and has cognitive complications from the aneurysm.

A few years ago I was contacted by Paul's Mom through facebook. Apparently she saw that I was into old bikes and was wondering if I would advise her and help her sell her husband's motorcycles. With no agreement as to how I would be payed, I immediately agreed. Who could possibly turn down the chance to play with a bunch of old bikes?

-Sidenote: I soon found out that before I was "hired" to sell the bikes that Paul's mom had already sold a K0 and K1 cb750   :'( I have no idea what shape they were in when sold but she basically said that she sold them for a song. She didn't know what they were worth :'( :'(

Anyway, the collection was scattered about 3 different locations. The first time I saw "my" cb750 was when I went to catalogue the bikes at a warehouse belonging to Paul's Uncle. It was hard to get at because it was sandwiched between a wall and an ambulance that didn't run. I snuck my way in there and took the best pics I could. This was in late fall of 2009.

As you can see she was rough but there was obvious potential. There was no major pitting in the chrome, no gigantic dent in the gas tank (and no rust too!), the motor turned over, and it was very original.

I honestly had no plans at first to acquire the bike because just days before I had arranged to buy this beauty, my first cb750 and also a K6:

Long story short, I got the green bike running on a shoestring budget but I didn't have the money to make it properly streetable and reliable. I ended up selling it to pay off the balance on the engagement ring I later gave to my now wife.

As time passed I began to think of ways I could get enough money to make a proper offer on the red K6 but even if I could get the money ( I couldn't, we were saving for a wedding), I had no place to store the bike since the 350 took up all the extra space in our one car garage. Luckily, one day I was talking to Paul's Mom about how selling the bikes was going and she asked me if I was interested in any of them. I immediately mentioned the 750 and she said I could have it!!!! I still had nowhere to put it but I finally had myself a 750 again.

About a year after she said I could have the bike, my wife and I moved to a place with a slightly larger one car garage. It looked juuuuust big enough to fit one car and two bikes. Meanwhile, Johnie kept bugging about when we were going to go get that K6. A few months after we moved and things seemed to be unpacked and under control I decided it was time to finally get my 750. Arrangements were made and with the help of johnie and his trailer we got the bike out of the building and to it's new home. This was october of last year.

From here on my project thread covers all of the work but the cliffnotes are that I tore the entire bike down, shoved all the parts in the basements, and proceeded to work on the parts over the course of the winter and spring. Everything was cleaned and polished as best as I could get it. It soon became apparent that this bike was going to clean up really well.

With the goal in mind of riding the bike to the AHRMA races at Road America I had to scramble to finish it but it came out great. The bike runs and drives better than it has any right to and I look forward to putting on many more miles!!!

I built the Dunstall Honda over a period of about 10 years.  It started in 2000 with the purchase of a basket case CB750 K1.  I started to search for the Dunstall bits to build the bike.  In the winter of 2008 I gathered enough parts and started to tear everything apart.  The build took about 3 years.  The bike was running and on the road in the summer of 2010 but needed paint and some other things.  The bike has a complete Dunstall kit on it and I have the fairing sides to make it a full fairing.  The motor is stock with a .25 overbore.

Basket Case K1

Today (I just got a set of Brituro Replica Dunstall silencers to replace the rusty flat black originals)

Thanks for looking and good luck to all.

Hey folks, looking for a win?  Better get the pics and stories rolling.  Its basically a five way tie so far.

My votes come from the content of the voting threads only.  So far I have two to choose from.  If anything, it makes it easier for me.  :P

Looks like you were still looking for calipers in the nomination picture. ;)

Are the wheels off a later 900 or what?  I've been looking at a dohc 900 roller that has something like them.

Wow tough competition on the story front! Well I dont have a great story about how it was pulled from the dump or resurrected from the ashes (which always amaze me!)....mine is a much simpler story.

I wanted a bike to ride and also be a little different....I had 2 previous CB750s (an F2 and and a K5) and knew thats what I wanted...

I was moving from the UK to Boston, US for work in February 1999 and I asked the SOHC forum (it was the mail list at the time) if anyone had a CB750 for sale. One member did (a CB750 K2) and he was in Maine. Wonderful! I jumped on a Greyhound bus and headed off to Portland, ME where John met me and drove me back to some small place in the woods to see the bike...this is what I saw:

Of course I bought it on the spot! I had brought a plate with me and rode it back to Boston. It didnt run great and was overheating. Lucky for me my previous "wanted" ad had caught the attention of a couple of fellow SOHC-ers and they invited me down for bbq and beers and a bike wrenching session. I arrived at one of the guys houses and before I even had my helmet off they had their hands on the bike. In no time it was running better than ever!

It became a big hit with the ladys...

The K2 had some issues however such as the final gear drive bearing circlip breaking which meant pulling the engine and replacing it (all this done in a mega-15 hour day one Saturday back in 2001). This fix worked for about 6 months and then same problem. I also had to return to the Uk for 2 yrs and so stored the bike in NH. On my return in 2003 I had bought tomesseli bars, the Guiliari seat and 4-4 HM300 pipes of Axl the Satanic Mechanic in Germany for making this bike into a "road racer". This would be the start of the process....

The bike started to develop

and was good for long distances - here it is in Winter Harbor Maine

and then the transformation began with a spare K2 tank

A bike should not only look good but should also ride well and have some decent power. So as a "road racer" the K2 was going to get some more engine surgery...This led me to meeting the master engine builder Mike Rieck who lucky for me lives very close to Boston...he helped me convert the bike into a an 810 cc racer

to this...

and it traveled far and wide again...just faster ;)

Me with BobbyR in Rhinebeck, NY 2011

Newburgh, NY

and needed some better shocks...Hagon 2810s

I then had the idea of making the bike as blingy as possible...chrome, chrome and more chrome...lucky for me Frankenstuff had just made some cool chrome-like covers

and then fellow SOHC member "knowsnothing" helped me polish the spare K2 tank to this...

13+ yrs in the making...one part at a time ;)

Thanks for reading!
cheers
Andy

I have always craved speed, but didnt get into street bikes until a few years ago.  I grew up on dirtbikes and took a two decade hiatus.  I have built a few cars and trucks but was always interested in vintage bikes.  What better vintage platform to build a bike that's main intent 'back in the day' was speed.  We all know the CB750 is regarded as the first superbike and parts were plentiful so it was a no brainer.

This is what i started with.  It was crusty, had been dropped, but it ran when i went to see it.  Didnt run when i got it home but hey, not going to let a little issue like that get me down.  I tore it down completely and smoothed the frame, powdercoated rims the frame and a few other bits.  Had the motor built to an 836 with a cam electronic ign etc.  I shaped a few stock tanks but none of them looked right with the cowl i chose so i picked up a dohc tank, modified it to fit and then later on modified it more for style.

I got it into mock up stage in my living room after i had the rear hub sleeved for the wheel bearing and the swingarm machined for new bushes.  The 16" rear gives a nice 70's period feel, sort of the look i was after.  The tank changed the look of the bike but what made the bike was when i cut knee inserts and had some custom paint applied.  After 3 years building and with 5600 miles on the clock it never fails to put a smile on my face.

Look for it soon in an upcoming book.
