Steel toed boots without a steel shank in the sole are dangerous.  It doesn't take a heavy impact to fold up and snip off toes.

Oh OK, I saw the Mythbusters episode where they debunked the "Steelcaps snipping off toes" theory too, but to be honest, I don't remember whether they were testing boots with a steel shank or not. Is the steel shank connected to the cap, like some kind of internal skeleton? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

And if a forklift runs over my toes, in steel toes or just boots, it's gonna suck.

But back to the OP, yes, people are idiots. Darwin hasn't been allowed to do his job for way too long. The herd needs to be thinned.

Well, not to turn this into a Mythbusters thread, but I don't always put my trust in what they find.  Entertaining? most definitely. Case in point, they did a show on fuel economy, A/C vs open windows, using a Ford Bronco.  I can't remember whether they said "nodifference" or "A/C uses more gas", but my van gets 2 to 3 more MPG with A/C.  I chalk it up to a difference in aerodynamics of different vehicles.

I am not allowed to wear steel safety shoes since I can be around underunning 3rd rails and they are worried about an arc over. I have to wear a boot with a non conductive phenolic shell in the toe.

Bobby, that is yet another reason I am envious of you. I would love to work around trains of any kind.

Speaking of which, I'm going on a train trip Thursday to Mystic CT for the weekend.

And you need to look me up.  You said you would do that sometime last year, so I could give you a tour of the program in my sig line.  The offer is still open.

Damn my lack of photoshop skills.  All I could picture during that video was 'shoping Terry's face to that guy, looking down the hole with the dog in his hands.
