H4 headlight conversion for 350/400F
« on: July 04, 2012, 08:29:57 pm »
I know I saw a thread here where someone took apart a headlight and put a modern bulb in it.  I'm pretty sure it was for the small fours with the 6-1/2" headlight.  I can't find it for the life of me.  Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I purchased a model 8022 headlamp from Candlepower for my CB 400.  It was a good fit.  See attached picture.  To deal with the limited alternator output I installed a Phillips EcoVision H4 bulb which claims 10% extra brightness and 20% less power consumption than the standard 55/60 bulb.

The EcoVision bulbs are great.. They actually only draw 44/48 watts and Philips claims they are brighter than the 55/60 bulbs.. I think I paid around $15 for a pair.

Thanks for the info! Did the mounting brackets on the 8022 line up with the screws on the 400? I've got a 350F with a 5 3/4 bucket, just picked up full sized bucket but wanted to see if I could get one of the Candlepower units in it without having to do any alterations to the brackets.

Check this auction out.  Guy claims he specifically did it on a 350F.  There's going to be some tinkering required though...  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Headlight-H4-Upgrade-Universal-162mm-6-3-8-CB360-GS400-RD400-See-Notes-E35-/230805971359?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35bd1ba19f&vxp=mtr

THIS LISTING IS FOR ONE NEW H4 HEADLIGHT UPGRADE KIT. THIS KIT INCLUDES THE LENS/REFLECTOR ASSEMBLY, 60/55 12V BULB, AND DUST BOOT.

THIS 162mm (6-3/8") HEADLIGHT IS A UNIVERSAL REPLACEMENT INTENDED FOR MANY MODELS AS LISTED BELOW, AND MAY HAVE MOUNTS OR TABS THAT ARE NOT USED ON YOUR BIKE.  BE SURE TO MEASURE YOUR ORIGINAL HEADLIGHT OR HEADLIGHT RING PRIOR TO ORDERING TO BE SURE THIS WILL WORK FOR YOUR CURRENT SETUP.

EVEN THOUGH THE MANUFACTURER CLAIMS THIS TO BE DIRECT FIT, IT IS LIKELY THAT SOME MODIFICATIONS WILL BE REQUIRED TO INSTALL THIS. WE HAVE PERSONALLY USED THIS LAMP ON HONDA CB350F, CB360, AND SUZUKI GS400 WITH ONLY MINOR MODIFICATIONS.

SINCE THIS ITEM IS NOT AN OEM PRODUCT, THERE MAY BE DIFFERENCES IN APPEARANCE AND/OR FIT AS COMPARED TO THE ORIGINAL PARTS (SEE LAST 5 PHOTOS ABOVE FOR COMPARISONS TO OEM LAMPS), BUT THE MANUFACTURER HAS DESIGNED THIS TO FIT ALL THE MODELS LISTED BELOW.

ON SOME MODELS THERE MAY BE A DIFFERENCE IN DIAMETER: THIS LAMP IS 6-3/8" DIAMETER (162mm) AS COMPARED TO THE ORIGINAL SEALED BEAM DIAMETER OF 6-1/2"-6-9/16" (162mm-167mm), WHICH MAY LEAVE A GAP BETWEEN THE TRIM RING AND THE LENS. ALSO SINCE THE LENS ON THIS LAMP IS MORE "FLAT" THAN THE CONVEX LENS ON OEM SEALED BEAMS, IT MAY SIT DEEPER IN THE HOUSING THAN ORIGINAL LAMPS.

MODIFICATIONS MAY BE REQUIRED ON SOME MODELS PARTICULARLY WITH THE BEAM ANGLE ADJUSTED HOLE ON THIS LAMP (SEE PHOTO 5 ABOVE FOR AN EXAMPLE OF MISALIGNMENT AS INSTALLED IN A CB360 TRIM RING). THIS MODIFICATION IS USUALLY LIMITED TO BENDING THE HEADLIGHT BEAM ADJUSTER TAB.

THIS KIT IS A DRAMATIC UPGRADE FROM THE LOW PERFORMANCE SEALED BEAM HEAD LAMPS ORIGINALLY FITTED, AND ALLOWS EASY AND INEXPENSIVE REPLACEMENT OF THE BULB USING A STANDARD H4 BULB AVAILABLE AT MOST MOTORCYCLE AND AUTO PARTS SUPPLIERS. THE TERMINAL ARRANGEMENT WILL FIT YOUR EXISTING ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR PERFECTLY.  OUR STOCK PHOTOS OF ACTUAL ITEMS SHOWN.

*NOTE: SOME MODELS THIS PART FITS NEED TO USE A LOWER WATTAGE BULB (35/35 OR 45/45 WATT). THIS BULB SUPPLIED WITH THIS KIT IS 55/60 WATT. WE CAN SUPPLY A LOWER WATTAGE BULB FOR $7.00 EXTRA. PLEASE SEND US A MESSAGE WITH EITHER BIKE YEAR AND MODEL, OR WATTAGE DESIRED.

The Candlepower unit fit in without any modification.  I originally bought if for a CB350 and it fit fine.  I then moved it to my more recently acquired CB 400.

looking at david silver spares facebook page and he has a lot of new 400f parts coming on line soon.
these include headlight with h4 fitting, new type of cam adjuster, new chain guard.
also on his webpage, there are a lot of new 400f articles.just click on d.s. stories.sorry about not adding links but i am computer illiterate.          ray. also a mention that the 400f2 model was fitted with longer head bolts which cured oil leakswhich occured on earlier models
started @ 16 with bianchi 75
           @ 17 with moto guzzi 175
best part was that i had to go to the home of stanley woods for parts.

I changed my CB400F bulb for a 45/45 H4  and I´m happy with it.  Anything that draws more than that will deplete your battery quickly.

Can the stock CB350F/400F stator be rewound to put out more juice like most other bikes can?
