Topic: Carb-b-q cleaning worked well.

I thought I'd share some pics of a carb cleaning I just did, I boiled the set of Mikuni's off my 78 KZ1000. After tearing things down I filled my wifes canning pot full of a 50/50 mix of Simple green and water and submerged the rack, the pot went on the bbq side burner. The jets, needles etc went in the ultra sonic. The Simple green not only ate any grime or varnish it stripped the crap black paint a PO covered the body of the carb in. Everything got sprayed with carb cleaner 2 to 3 times real well and passages blown out with compressed air, new o-rings and gasket went in as well. The boil worked great, I've always had good results with Simple green as a first stage soak but heating it really did the trick.

I've tried vinegar/hot water, pinesol/hot water, pinesol/vinegar/hot water, but never had the courage to dunk the whole rack for fear of impregnating the felt washers!

Terry, over here I can get Simple green at Walmart, Home Depot, Canadian Tire and a few other places as well. Hopefully you can find it in Australia, it works really well as a first stage cleaner.

brewsky, I pulled all of the o-rings and fiber gaskets off prior to boiling. They were clean enough to let the bike run and idle well but leaked from the float bowl gaskets, so I figured I'd do a thorough cleaning while I had them torn down for the gasket replacement. The only rubber pieces I left in we're the throttle shaft bushings which are rubber, Simple green doesn't hurt rubber or plastics. It's Eco friendly and biodegradable, as it's just a surface cleaner and degreaser among other things. It's safe to touch and dump down the drain when your finished. Smells nice too.

Need to turn that big wrench around I might try that on a spare set I have. Maybe I missed it. How long did you cookum I need new felt anyway.

Ken, I'd say I let them boil for an hour or so. I'd pull them out and dunk em every now and then, till they looked clean. As well as rinse them in warm water in the laundry sink to wash off lifting paint.

Yup DOHC, Ive gone over to the dark side with a 78 Kz1000.

You are correct with the locomotive, my lower forearms are all railway related tattoos. I'm a bit of a train nut you could say.

Careful with Simple green and aluminum ( http://www.simplegreen.com/solutions_faqs.php?search_query=aluminum  ) otherwise your parts may come out black. Here's what Simple Green has to say.

I've been hooked on the idea of one since the first time I watched Mad Max, haha. Got lucky and one popped up on craigslist cheap, seems to have been well taken care of the more I dig into it. Terry said I'd give up riding my Cb750 once I rode a kz1000, we shall see
