Cheap iphone / camera mount.
« on: July 10, 2012, 12:25:12 PM »
Been wanting to mount my iphone so I can use my GPS.
I use an app called Waze, which besides showing 3d maps and directions, also shows real time road hazards, and keeps track of the sneaky cops and their speed traps.  8)

Anyway the mounting options are pretty expensive and imho only questionably secure.
So....
I bought a cheap but good phone case and JB Welded a couple of 1/4 20 nuts to it. But only after a proper prep of course... (heavy scratches and degreaser)
And... a $5 mini tripod camera mount. (make sure to get one with a steel ball & socket)
The legs come right off and the hose clamp screws right on. Easy!

Less than $20 and less than 15 minutes of work.  ;D

Most excellent.  I too will be visiting both the App Store and the Hardware store to do the same.  I just looked at a Gorilla Grip and it was nearly $80 bucks and doesnt work with a phone cover.  Much prefer the industrial look of the two nuts (pun intended) on the phone.  Classy!

Note that he uses FLANGE nuts, which is a very good idea.
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

I wouldn't trust the glued nuts either, but then again, I don't like glue on my nuts...

Attach a cord through a hole in the case to act as a safety wire. Or use a coated braided stainless wire to act as second line of defense.  Presuming it is going to stay in the case.
There were some inexpensive, $15, gps cases that were water resistant so you could use your car gps on a bike or bicycle without worrying about weather or investment in a motorcycle gps. They might work for smaller IPhones, not a IPhone 6+
