Neutral Indicator Light
« on: July 18, 2012, 08:14:11 AM »
I have a 1977 Honda 750 super sport and the neutral indicator light works only sometimes...usually doesnt work when I'm riding.
Any idea or solutions?

thanks

I would hope that my neutral light does not come on when I am in the process of riding it.  ;)

If you mean when you are riding and shift to neutral and the light does not come on if I remember right it might be a bad ground wire.

ha good call....yeah when i stop and want to put it in neutral i dont see a light even when i am in neutral.
bad ground wire huh? if i had a bad ground would that effect all the lights? i would think all lights have to share the same ground. not saying your wrong...just thinking out loud here.
thanks for the reply

The neutral light circuit is powered up all the time - that is, +12v applied to bulb, then from bulb down to the neutral switch near the front sprocket.  When the transmission shifter drum spins around to neutral, the switch connects to ground, completing the circuit and lighting the light.

So, no bad ground wires in this case, but certainly could have bad connections anywhere from the +12v supply to bulb (inside the headlight shell) to the wires that go downstairs, to the connection at the switch, to the switch itself not making good ground on the transmission shift drum.

Start with checking all connections.

Good luck with it all,

Kirk

thanks! i didnt know that the positive goes to the bulb then to the switch....is that considered negative switching?
there is definitely a loose connection somewhere. I have a really hard time turning on my back with the ignition key.
when it is on i give the bike a shake and it just turns off.
So when i ride the bike and i hit a bump and power is killed that turns the bike off completely......ill have to figure out how
to take the ignition apart and go from there.
Thankfully its an electrical problem..I've been electrician for almost 10 years. I got this.
