After reading this post http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=108646.0 and watching the poor man's flake buster I decided to give this technique a try.

poorman's flake buster

For me this is mostly a learning exercise using some cheap clear, some Marta Steward sliver glitter, and HOK KK08 Tangerine Concentrate to tint the clear.

Other than all the bling, bling the best part was seeing how well the HOK concentrate works just 1/4 oz made enough candy orange to do a whole tank! Also the Harbor Freight Detail gun works great! Very nice fine mist at around 20 PSI. I also learned that 16 cent while ceramic tiles from Lowes make excellent test panels.

This is more of a hypnotic orange than sunrise due to the bling factor. When the sun is out it is hard to stop staring.

My next project will be sunrise, but I got to figure out how to subdue the flake a bit. Maybe a smaller flake will do the trick?

Will you use a different orange next time? Or do you just think it was too much/big flake? I'm very interested in how this goes.

No I am pretty sure the orange is ok HOK Orange Tangerine is the sunrise orange recipe which is posted here http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=64814.0. You can make it a very light orange or very close to red with the concentrate. That type of control is what you are after.

I tired mixing some flake in the detail gun and that didn't go so well all the flake got bound in the gun. I might try again this time I will weight and use smaller flake.

The recipe says 1 gram flake for every 10 of base coat so I guess that is not alot of flake?

All I did was spray clear use the poor man's flake buster then use tinted clear. I got quite a bit of orange peel going on so I am going to try some wet sanding and see what that does. It took about 6 to 8 passes with the tinted clear to get it that orange.

Today I will try to put a proper base coat and follow the actual directions. This was all about learing how the concentrate works. It might smooth out with some wet sanding don't know?

Are you kidding Martha is one tough broad are hand made from a cake she baked herself several months before going to jail. She used the file baked in the cake and what you see in the pics is the result.

How big is 200 micron? I am going to try Surfite Silver from Rothmetalflake.com which is .008 for the LIL Daddy

there are 25,400 microns in an inch. So 200 micron is real close to .008" (.007874")

Correction it's .004 size. Anyone know if a .8 spray tip will work with this size flake.

It was 400 micron flake I sprayed through the same nozzle I do all my painting with.

Ok what size nozzle is that? Roth says 1.3 or 1.4 for Baby flake works.

I am giving this another go around to see if I can better control the appearance of the flake. Still using the same Martha Steward Flake, but this time I added a regulator like in the video. Wow what a difference! Instead of looking like a disco ball now it is just a little sparkly.

1st pic is my homemade flake buster, 2nd is a little flake with the regulator, and 3rd is full coverage. From the recipe is only 10% flake to paint and by looking at a scratch on an original tank there is sliver between the flakes. Hopefully I am on the right track.

Does anybody know the correct distance for a detail HVLP detail spray gun with a .8 tip? The paint seem to go on much smoother when I am right up close. Is this correct?

I think this video answers my question about the correct distance. Very good video on candy. To sum it's not about distance it's about paint transfer. John Kosmoski from House of Kolor keeps talking about how you got to see the paint making contact and I think I know what he is talking about now.

House Of Kolor - How To Paint A Car - John Kosmoski

Watch the video and pay attention to his technique and how the paint goes on perfectly. Also, check out the attached pic from 3:16 into the video notice how close he is to the hood of the car.

Any of you paint gurus have an opinion on this I'd like to hear it.

UPDATE:
After painting a couple tanks and getting huge runs I learned that you need to stop at the front of the tank when painting the sides. If you don't stop and reposition yourself you will get a nasty run. You need to be square and parallel to what your painting at all times.

Also it might be a good idea to put your tank on block so you can easily spray the bottom of the tank. Hope this helps!
