Candy Gold K1 750, Update 10/28/12 Completed for now
« on: July 28, 2012, 02:01:39 PM »
Well I picked this beauty up from Iowa last night. My father and I took the 330 mile route each way for a little father son bonding.

Leary of the actual miles but the overall condition is IMO is great. Tank does have some dings but I will leave them for now. Not bad for a bike that is 41. Exhaust will need to be replaced. Plan of right now is to change out the spark plugs, oil, oil filter, some new tires, send the carbs off to SOHC DIGGER, new battery and front headlight. Spend some time cleaning before the winter comes then go about properly making her look great. I need to see if I can get power. The wife is working tonight so hopefully I can take the kids outside and pop in a battery to see where I am at. I know these pics were posted in another thread but this will be the primary thread for her....

All wires are soft like new...

Only registration sticker on the bike

Pretty cool seeing the original markings on the electrical

Some duct tape removed from the exhaust. Nasty dent

Pretty much all the chrome is like this. Dirt covered, wiped away looks really nice

Can someone please tell me why I have these numbers on this cylinder head and what do they mean?

Nice video Tews. She looks like a great keeper. Was she stored in a barn? Did he give you some history on it? One time owner or what? How do the carbs look under the float bowls? Should be a neat thread here. Good luck with the K1 and will be watching with interest...

I am in the process of contacting the original owner right now. Guy who sold it to me simply dumped it. Stated he owned a tow truck company and acquired it. Good thing for me is that he titled in his name but in Iowa they put the previous owner name on it as well.  Now I pulled the main jets. I can see right through them. Even with my iphone. They are dirty by the threads. Not a single scratch on the jets. Look as if they were never fiddled with and drained  Bowls are dirty but not really that bad.  Any of you think maybe the carbs have not been touched ever by looking at the pics?

Wow!  Nice score.  I'd power wash it to clean off the dirt, cobwebs, etc.  Polish the chrome, and use some rust removal and touch up on the frame for now.  Get that sucker running and out on the road.  And, I almost forgot, get rid of the sissy bar!!

Changed out the oil and filter today. This thing had to have been somewhere  where dirt was. Removed the oil side cover and found this. Inside oil filter wasn't bad at all. I did find these cool stamps on the cases. Any idea what the numbers mean?

I sure hope for your sake the original owner was DONE WITH IT.. Dont fix it till you are sure..

If you left it mostly intact as a survivor bike, the exhaust wont  be a huge detraction.. only original once.. I would keep it that way... Try pulling the baffles out of the HM 300s, and you can hear its song...

What do you mean the original owner done with it? I have the title and I already signed it.

I'm still in the process of contacting him. I stalked google last night. I found his address and his number no longer works. Made contact with whom I beleive is his son. Asked him for his number now waiting for a response. The PO is a farmer. The amount of information available on the net si scary. I was able to see how much in subsidies he was granted for farming.

Kinda hoping the idea of contacting him comes through. I really am looking forward to learning the history of the bike.

I think I will be keeping the bike as is, but get her running. Leave all the blemishes.

What do you recommend about the surface rust on the frame?

Also any idea why this engine has the m665 ink stamps on both cases? I looked and my other k1 engine do not have them.

Could be batch numbers or date codes.. hard to say, but cool its still there. The rust will clean up with fine steel wool on chrome  (make sure its clean steel wool, no abrasive pads) . On the pinted portion rust may come off with brass brush or plastic bristles.. FLITZ migjht help.. FLITZ will bring the luster of the black frame paint, back to like new condition.
I cleaned up my sandcast found in a barn, it cleaned up real well, looked great..

AHH you got me worried with the comment on hoping the PO is done with it.

I have the steel wool 000 waiting to attack the chrome. I will look around for the Flitz. getting the frame to shine wont be hard where the surface rust isn't. My finger wiping away the dirt bring the shine out.

Looking at the inside of that oil filter housing, I would clean the bottom of the oil tank too. You would not believe the sludge you can get out of there.

I put a quart of oil in and it didn't really go I to the engine. Filled up the oil reservoir that was it. The wife works tonight so I am not able to remove it. That will be done though.

Rookie ? Here. Do I simply unscrew and clean out? Use a pressure washer to get the sludge out?

Well, you do not want to wash that sludge into the oil intake at the bottom of the oil tank. Drain the oil tank and you can do it 1 of 2 ways. Remove the tank and wash it out with carb cleaner, pressure or what ever you want. Or, I use a long screwdriver to get a lot of the sludge out without removing it. Then when most of it is out I take a long "gripper" type tool and use a torn rag to wipe the rest out.

Nice find.

Look into paintless dent removal for the tank.  And a replacement exhaust, 300's would be awesome, and keep it original.

Nice find. Some elbow grease will make all the difference. You'll soon have a nice ride. Please don't use steel wool on good chrome! The chrome plating is only microns thick. If it's just surface rust and not eatten through then use something like 5% vinegar or NevRDull which will not damage the chrome finish like steel wool. Steel wool works by scratching. Chemicals work by dissolution of rust.

Hoping you didn't pay for a 535 mile bike but rather for a 535 mile speedometer. The head gasket wouldn't be leaking at 535 miles nor would you have ANY sludge in the filter housing. Those carb parts are no where near 535 miles either. Way too much gravel abrasion on the frame too.

I'll be watching your progress  :)
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

After cleaning out the garage I looked hard at the K1. What is missing I know I posted before and I realized what the guy had done. He didn't have a key to he rigged up the ignition.

How hard will this be to fix? I have spare ignitions.

I decided to pull the plugs. I needed to see the top of the pistons. Not sure if the picture can emphasize enough what I am able to see. I can see the shininess on the top of the pistons. There is some carbon build up but nowhere near what I've seen on other pistons. Could this be an example of low miles or years of running lean.
