WHooohoooo it's DONE!!!!!!
« on: May 11, 2005, 02:35:05 PM »
Bought a 75 CB550F two weeks ago....

Finished fixing it up today!

Stripped/painted the frame,  repainted the sidecovers/gastank, painted/polished the engine, replaced the seat...polished all the chrome, sanded/polished the front forks,  put on an m.c.s.c. 4-1 exhaust...lots of tuning/adjustment of all of the maintanance items.....etc etc....

Looks sweeeeet and runs great!

Just wanted to thank everyone on this forum...without ya'll and the "search" feature, I couldn't have done it!

Well, to a point I restored, to a point I changed.  The bike would never have been a show-peice, so I went mildly cafe-racer with it...I didn't get tacky about it,  just a little here, a little there, to make it slightly "different"...

S_400F:   There is a motorcycle salvage yard about 30 miles from where I live.  The only mechanical parts that needed replacing on the bike were the master cylinder (used one off of a new kawa,  designed for dual calipers, so the front brake is much firmer, yeah it's not original, but phoey!),  and the caliper,  which I took off of another bike,  and sanded/rebuilt to suit.   Mechanically, the bike was in very sound shape, if completely neglected, maintainance-wise.  Most of the mechanical time was spent adjusting, oiling, tightening, tweaking....

The seat is off of some sort of CB, not sure which one...nor was the ebay seller.  At any rate, I made it fit, and it looks close enough to the original seat that only a cognescinti would see something "different" regarding it.  It is in perfect condition, and I won the auction for 9.99, plus shipping, so what the hey...

tintin:  The motor was relatively simple.  I washed it in degreaser, sanded it, masked off the chrome bits and side covers, and sprayed it with dupli-color gloss black engine enamel.  Once it had dried a bit, I sanded the edges of the cooling fins to give them a "silver" edge, then sprayed clearcoat over that to prevent corrosion...looks fantastic....

I didn't document my progress, unfortunately...

As soon as I get the opportunity, I will take a few digi's of the bike and upload them...

A word on the mscs exhausts (LFU 4-1)....they have a nice mellow tone, are a pain in the arse to keep from leaking around the header/muffler connections, and they start to *howl* when the bike comes "on the pipes" around 5k rpm... Very pleasant.  The paperwork suggested I adjust the jetting, but honestly, I think the bike was running a tad rich before, because it pulls very cleanly to 11k with the new exhaust on it...no hitching or backfiring, etc...a plug chop came up brown, so it seems about right..

Update....

as a word to the wise....

tire-magic on a motorcycle seat=slippery seat!

I got a little over-zealous using black-magic tire shine on the seat, and then decided to take the bike for a quick ride...

While I was on the road, I opened it up in first, and when the motor hit its powerband at 5500rpm my arse slid back on the seat a bit...which (can you tell where this is going?) changed the center of mass a bit and...

lo and behold,  a 400lb 550cc honda pulled the front wheel of the ground...

Once it was up, I just said what the hell, and rode it through the tach in first on the back wheel.....

No, I won't do it again, and yes I know it was dangerous, and I'm sorry...

but it *was* fun... ;)

Well live and learn, I suppose...

That is SHARP! Nice work man!  Really like your choice in paint.  Is that orange a metalic or a chameleon cuz it seems to go to yellow as the sun hits it.  I'm thinking of doing my engine like that on my 78 cafe project.  Gonna take me more than 2 weeks though!  Dont have the time or the $.  Later!

Pearl Blazing Orange is the color name...same one as the new Kawa Cafe-Esque Z-1 ;) It has a very very subtle pearl to it, although it really jumps out in the photos!  It's much less obvious in person...

Thanks everyone!

AHa the frame....where there was rust, hand sanded it down with auto-papers of greater and greater grit numbers, quick spray with zync-chromate primer (same kind of stuff they use on boat lower units), then finished it with the best stuff that comes out of a k-mart can (hahah),  think it was a Krylon black...

Yes I have a job ;)

just picking about the job, i started on a cb500 this winter, you know, build a cafe out of ti, grand ideas of making a tank and tail section. cut all the crap off the frame... then i found a set of old flat slid mikuni's, bought a big bore kit, a set of correct rear sets...  you know how it goes a quick little project has turned into a complete rebuild, now tintin found a youshomera head and bigbor that i am going to try to get, it just never ends. didnt someone mention something about falling off the slippery sloap? i think i did a swan dive. oh one other question? what is the easest way to get the engine back in the frame?
thanks joe
btw, nice work on yours
