Play in CB550f clutch
« on: July 29, 2012, 01:45:40 AM »
Help please,CB 550f 1975 (US spec)
Needed to change clutch,no problem, new friction plates sourced, end float checked and bought in line via new shim. However on inspecting the basket (as per the manual) for tight rivets I find that whilst the rivets are tight ,the large drive gear on the rear, that is sandwiched between a plate and the basket and held by the rivets has a small amout of movement,in fact it floats very slightly, this is noticable when assembled on the shaft and the gear is engaged with the pinion as a slight rocking motion of the basket and visible at the interface between the gear and basket.I have check tightened the rivets and they are sound.
My question therefore is,is this float/play normal or do I have a problem?
The word from forums vast experience is anticipated and welcomed
Cheers
Stuart

they do get a little sloppy, they were rigidly fixed when new,ive never seen a really tight one,ive seen a bad one or two with obviously too much backlash.
