F2 Supersport Side Cover Question
« on: June 23, 2006, 03:15:20 AM »
Hi folks,
I've got another question about the notorius Left side cover for the F2/F3 750.  I know that David Silver Spares markets a reproduction of this cover, Has anyone here ever seen or owned one?  I'm curious if it has the visable external fasteners, or does it look like the stockers?  I'm really looking for something that looks stock but what the one at DSS looks like will determine how much I'm willing to bid on Ebay for a original one.  I was interested in an original on Ebay but it just hit the same price as the one from DSS which raised the question for me...

Thanks in Advance.

The DSS sidecovers look exactly stock EXCEPT that there are no holes for the badge mounts. The location for the holes are marked on the inside should you want to install badges.

Orcinus, I just ordered both left and right from DSS about 3 months ago.  The right side was the aftermarket cover, they were out of lefts, and actually sent me a NOS Honda cover.  --  Go Figure... ???

The DSS sidies are beautifully made, better quality than the OEM items, and certainly much better quality plastic, almost nylon, in fact. Only problem that I had, was mine fell off on the bike's maiden voyage, never to be seen again, even though I drove my car 100 miles, scouring the sides of the roads twice, but I never found it.

That was 2 years ago and I'm still pissed as I'd painted it candy burgundy and clearcoated it with expensive 2K clear, and fitted a new OEM badge, it probably looked remarkably beautiful arcing through the stratosphere on that balmy fall evening on it's way to "Sidecover Valhalla", boo hoo! I consoled myself with the thought that God probably took it for his own F2 rebuild because it's beauty was unique, and even though technically he broke one of his own commandments by knocking mine off, I could at least understand why.

I'm hoping mine had a manufacturing defect, but the flat knobs were a little "undersized"? I initially thought that the old mounting rubbers that I re-used were worn out, but in fact, when I found a good used OEM sidecover on Ebay, and once again repainted it with the last of my candy burgundy paint, and put another badge on it, (thanks to another forum member) it was a tight fit in the rubber mount. Just be careful, if you buy one and it feels a little "loose" contact DSS and see what they'll do to replace it, or like me, you'll cry yourself to sleep, mourning your tragic loss. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Terry,  Martha and I burned a couple of incense sticks in memory of 'Sidey" last weekend.  I know it's not much, but we feel your pain.

Thanks John, and please pass my thanks on to Martha, as you both know it's particularly hard for me around this time each year, it was two years ago last month, and I really thought I'd be ok, but it wasn't to be, my subconcious took control and before I realised I was driving up that road again, just wishing I could even find a fragment of it, just for closure, it really is a terrible feeling, now I understand how the parent of a missing child feels.

Sometimes, just out of the corner of my eye I see a flash of red, almost like God is taunting me and I wonder how a god who created the F2 could be so cruel as to take "sidie" away from me in the prime of his life, but one day I know that we'll be reunited, probably when my racer project blows up at 12000 Rpm and spits me down the road, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

Thanks for all the quick replies...  I guess I'll let the high bidder on Ebay keep the cover, it's already almost $10 more than DSS + s/h.  You have to wonder why ppl bid stuff up to more than you can just go out and buy it for...  ;D

Oh, Terry... Sorry 'bout your loss...  Hey, If God's building a F2, maybe that's who keeps outbidding me on parts.... ;)

That's probably right mate, and also explains why I can never win a set of CR carbs for my racer project either, he's probably got a "stop the world for 5 seconds" snipe program running,  ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I got one from DSS and it is excellent except it does not seem to fasten securely. It is sort of "wobbly" and I have to make sure the top back and the bottom plugs are in the grommets properly. I assume that is why there are so few original ones left - same problem. They all probably blew off along the highway as happened to the original owner of my bike. He too is still looking for that cover! However, the DSS cover is made from heavy plastic that is almost like rubber. That allows one to drill a small hole into the rather large plug base and run a thin wire through which can be fastened to the frame. Mine hasn't blown off yet to test it but I have not ridden it much either. I tried to drill the original right side cover and it is hardened plastic that would just shatter. Glued an electical connector eye to it and ran the wire through it. Did this with my 550K also.
Time is short!

Terry, I did not break ANY of my commandments OR steal your sidie.
What ACtually happened is this....D.Silver EXPECTS that people will want to put a "decent amount" of paint ON their newly aquired side panels and thus leaves ROOM on the pegs for this paint... HOWEVER if one tries to "skimp" or "cut costs" on applying a very thin coat of paint, then of course the side panel will be loose and fall off....  The aboriginal peoples know about "whities paint saving tendencies" and hide in the bushes just waiting for "thinly painted sidies" to happen on by..
They sell their newly harvested gatherings on ebay, but only after claiming that both sides fit F1 AND F2... this is how to spot them.
I know, I know, I still have to send the mags............
how are yeh bud?
In my own experience...
It wasn't a Previous Owner who didnt know what he was doing that messed up your bike, it was The Previous owners mate who THOUGHT that HE did.

While I may also suffer from the dreaded "whitey paint saving tendancies", I have to ask...  Why would anyone need to paint the BACK side of a side cover???  ;D

The next time some Abo recovers and sells one of Terry's perfectly finished "sidies", I hope I'm johnny-on-the-spot for a "buy it now".  It would probably look better than one I did myself...  ::)

Whattya mean "probably" whitey? Don't you guys know that I'm black? Oh oh oh, what's going on now, you don't want to talk to me anymore? Oh wait a minute, this is interesting, I'm only black down to my collar, and my hands are only black to my forearms? Hmmmnnn, maybe I need a stronger soap? Damn, I'll have to take down my Malcolm X poster!

Karl, where's my mags you "promiser of many things, and deliverer of "bugger-all"? I think you're discriminating against me because not only do I have the most beautiful F2 on Earth and you're jealous, but I'm also black? (and white?) Ha ha, Cheers, Terry. ;D

After watching that last one on Ebay go for 110 bucks I decided to move forward with my plan to adapt a 75 super that  I have to fit the 78. Here is my first step. Take the donor studs from a 72 CB200 sidie that I don't need and stick them to the 75 with bondo.  I think with appropriate smoothing I can glass right  over the bondo to make them Strong. Here is my 1st photo for this process.
