Mechanic in Melbourne
« on: August 03, 2012, 09:05:50 PM »
Just wanted to give a recommendation to a mechanic I have dealt with recently. I do all my own minor servicing on the bike and keep it maintained to the best of my knowledge but every now and then have taken it along to a bike mechanic for some expert help.

I've been to a few but by far the best in my opinion has been Greg Johnson at Johnson Cycle Tune in South Melbourne. He's been in the workshop for 40 odd years and has a history in the local racing scene.

Greg could be described as a cantankerous old bastard and first impressions do nothing to dispel this BUT he's a bloody good mechanic and I have found him to be very knowledgeable and helpful.  And, after all these years, still remains enthusiastic about fixing bikes.  And once you get to know him, he's a good bloke, up for a chat and with plenty to say about pretty much any topic.

I don't often see him with a lot of bikes in his workshop but I think it's probably more a case of him not advertising or presenting his workshop as open to the public. I've found his work to be exemplary and I wouldn't hesitate to suggest him to anyone looking for a bit of help with older bikes.  I have absolutely no affiliation with him, just a satisfied customer spreading the word.

yeah good on ya hummbug, its good to spread good word,,bad mouthing is far too easy to do,the old mechanics are the best,,in the day parts had to be fixed not just replaced, adjustments had to be done whereas these days if its out of adjustment it gets replaced.
