bike security!!!!
« on: August 06, 2012, 03:38:13 PM »
so what do you do to lock your bike of for piece of mind?

so i have my motorcycle out but i have no security other than the key.... steering lock is gone

so what do you all do? chains? pad locks?

or if someone is going to steal ur bike they are going to take it anyways...... i mean my cb550 is so light 2 people can essentially lift it into a pick up truck....

so what do you all do to keep piece of mind?

Keep it in a garage, behind a gate, or somewhere it can't be seen from the street while at home.

When parked in public have a motorcycle specific lock and park in a safe place. (not behind a building or far corner of a lot where the public won't see someone messing with it.)

I use a heavy duty "U" lock through the rear rim and locked to one of the shocks/ frame to keep someone from rolling it away.

Sad thing is, if someone really wants it they'll take it. Just don't be the low hanging fruit.

Not putting miles on your bike is like not having sex with your Girl Friend so she'll be more desirable to her next Boy Friend.

Park it in plain sight whenever I can, or it's parked in front of the tattoo shop I work at. Most people know not to #$%* around with m/c's in front of a tattoo shop haha. I use the steering lock and a cb750 is pretty heavy so I'm not to stressed about it, I'm more concerned that some retard is going to back into it in a parking lot than steal it.

Make it as much a pain in the ass as you can. I fantasize about keeping a Nail gun, some cartridges and cleats in my knapsack to drive into the asphalt wherever I park

Put a hidden kill switch on it somewhere and use a disc lock, the harder you make it to take, the less people will be interested in stealing it. Most of these older bikes are stolen by opportunists because they are easy to steal, any deterrent is better than none...

Wouldn't you like to know!  Seriously though- don't park it in stupid places, fork lock it, mount an empty gun holster to it.

I use a fat link chain and a lock. Not the best I know but a deterrent. Mostly from those I know  who might think it's funny to hide my bike... and crackheads and scrap collectors.
Always park it right next to the door wherever I am.

To be honest the Fours are not prime targets for theft.  Modern sport bikes are what they are after and sometimes Harleys.  I am not saying that Honda Fours don't get stolen but it just isn't practical for a professional thief.

I would say any elaborate or expensive security products will not be money well spent.  Just stick to the basics and you should be ok.

On my 750 I have a tool bag attached to the grab bar behind the seat.
I've got a smaller tool bag with tools I put in there as well.
On my 550 the chain and lock fits in the tool tray.

Thankfully I have a closed garage to lock it in at night. When I'm out, I'll usually park under lights or near a security camera if I know they're there, or on the sidewalk near the building I'm in.

It's just a matter of cutting the brake line to overcome that. Turn the idle screw up and ride away.

OK, it is clear to tell my story now.

Last week i finished buying my last new tire. Yesterday took the 750 to work. After work I was backing up and notice HS, this is tough to back up. Look down and the new tire is flat. WTF .... A lady I work with has an air compressor in her car. We hook up and the thing breaks while trying to pump the tire. WTF

ANyway,  I had to call  my mom as the wife was working 2nd shift at the hospital. I took off the side covers and worried all night if she would be there or damaged.

Get to work this morning and she is intact.

I'm more worried about the side covers, they're $50 each on ebay and all you have to do is pop them off.

Just stick to the basics and you should be ok.

Agreed.

When I'm away from home on my bike and feel the need to lock it up, I bring a cable lock in my backpack.  I run it through the rear wheel and up over the seat.  I think one of the most important things besides securing the bike is making it obvious that it's been secured.  An opportunistic thief will see the lock and move on to an easier target.  A determined thief who has specifically targeted your bike will get it pretty much no matter what you do.  Luckily, most bikes like ours don't tend to be targeted for theft.

i have an SS brake line... your not going to cut that with a pair of wire cutters thats for sure and if they have bolt cutters to cut my brake line well then they would cut a chain.

idk this thing is really bright and obvious so thats be a good deterrent.

i live in a college town and i just want something to put on my bike when im at school. my backpack will be full of books so i cant carry around a chain or u lock. so i needed something small.

all those wheel lock things slide into drilled brake rotors and i dont have any drilled rotors. plus they arnt that visible and knowing me ill ride off with it on  :P

i just want to stop maybe some dummy from joy riding my bike and dumping it.

You could always ride with a big ol' chain across yr shoulder. That'd definitely increase the intimidation factor on campus...
Seriously, your best theft deterrent may be the fact that your bike stands out.
