Topic: Wintergreen plus unobtainium cam tensioner??

Ok, we all know that wintergreen does wonders for hardened intake boots. I've also heard that it may work for soaking the rubber velocity stacks to soften them up.

So....what about the rubber on a cam chain tensioner? I am about to slap together my CB350F top end and I was thinking about soaking the tensioner in some wintergreen. The tensioners are pretty hard to find in new condition so it would be great just to recondition what I have?

The problem with 29+ year old tensioners is they start coming apart and leaving bits of rubber in the oil.
If you soften them up maybe they will just come apart faster.

Get a new tensioner.

"Slap together "... Better be carefully put together with the right stuff.

The 400F tensioner would be the same part, even if it has a different number.

Is the tensioner shoe really rubber?  I thought it was a hardened plastic polymer. 

I question that the same treatments are applicable to different polymer structures.

You could be the guinea pig, though.  Do let us know if the shoe turns to liquid goo, ok?

From what I've read recently they're spring steel with a vulcanized rubber "belly" and teflon coating.

Now where on earth did I read that...?

Hmmm sounds like not the best option. I've already had one 750 velocity stack turn to goo, Lord knows what would become of that tensioner!
