K8 replacement petcock headache
« on: August 17, 2012, 09:39:32 PM »
I may have accidently broken the spigot off my oem petock while trying to remove the tank  :'( .  I have been looking for a replacement one that routes the fuel the same direction as the original (out the back toward the center of the bike, not the rear) and decided to with a pingel.

I ordered a power-flow model 6111-AH with 1/4inch NPT inlet.  I also picked up what i thought was the correct adpator nut for my 78 750k tank.  Turns out i picked the wrong one.  When i went down to measure, the bung came out to be 16mm (please correct me if i am wrong) and the smallest the company makes is 18mm or so i was told.

If anyone has successful used a pingel or knows a work around for a k8, i would be much obliged.  Or if anyone knows of another maker with the correct fuel routing, that would be cool too.

Here is a pic of the petcock

I used a K7 (pointed to the rear) and just used a little more fuel line. Had the same issue trying to adapt something else, finally gave up and resorted to the K7.

The Pingels are very expensive but very nice but I would use the K7 that points to the rear of the bike. It works fine.

I ordered mine from CB750 Supply.com

Products page http://www.cb750supply.com/products
Petcock near the bottom of the page. If you look under FUEL it is not there.
They lose a lot of business just on this one mistake.
I do not really like this web page. You cannot call them either.

Yes it is confusing. I did buy one from them for my CB750 K8.
Finding it on that site takes time.

Ive done this swap with the Pingel Guzzler model and it works great. Youve gone 1 step more the correct direction than I did though. I wasnt sure which adapter nut to order and I wanted the petcock to extend further out of the tank so I used a ID threaded brass fitting instead. Also careful reaming had to be done on the bore of the tank fitting to allow the Pingel screen/filter clearance to slide into the tank. Ill put up a pic next time Im at the puter.....Boats

Hi boats, any specifics you could tell me would be awesome (like part # of brass fitting and maker plus ream size for screen/filter clearance).

You wont be happy with my particulars about this. I took the petcock to Lowe's and tested which fitting threaded onto the valve. And thankfully the threads that fit the valve also fit the tank. I used the 2 inch version of a brass coupler that I found in the plumbing dept. If I were to redo it I would use the 1 inch version instead though. As for opening up the throat of the tank opening, just use a variety of drill bits and barely remove enough material to allow the filter screen to slide in. Take careful measurements of what your working with though, you cant remove too much metal before the project turns to sh!t.

I would also recommend the in-line filter too.

Yeah thats thread tape on the valve. I doubt its fuel resiliency but it hasnt leaked yet. You might research a fuel resistant sealer for your project.

Hope this somewhat helps. Its been awhile since I did it......Boats  8)

And thankfully the threads that fit the valve also fit the tank.

That looks good. Pretty much how I envisioned it when I was trying to find other options before settling with the K7 valve. I think the "threads also fit the tank" was a matter of the soft brass giving up its threads as it was threaded onto the tank, since I'm pretty sure the Pingle threads are npt? Like the looks of it though, and you can't argue if it works!
