'75 550 Carb Rebuild Question-NOW W/ PICS
« on: August 31, 2012, 03:01:14 PM »
OK, I just cleaned rebuilt the carbs on my '75 CB550. Everything went right and according to the manual. Everything is back together the way it was before, and looks right.

The problem I have now is that when I roll the throttle linkage on it feels like the slides are rubbing on the inside alot and takes a lot of effort to both open and close. The return spring won't even pull them back down. Also, The idle  adjustment screw wont reach the bar to engage.

What have I done wrong?

For the slides, do I need to lube them with something? If so what? Will that help?

For the idle adjustment screw, what do I do if it doesn't reach? can I simply adjust the linkage arms on the the top rod? Or will that just add problems?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I think you put it back together wrong somehow.  :) Some photos would probably help.

The slides should easily drop without any lube.

Last night I sprayed some WD-40 on the slides to see if that would smooth out the operation. It did, but only a very little bit. It's still very rough as the slides go up and down. If I open it up all the way, it siezes at the top and has to be forced back down. I did remove the link arm from the throttle shaft, but did not disassemble anything on the throttle shaft (slide). I left the jet needle and slide areas alone as that looked good.

As requested, here are some pics.

#1 shows from top view down inside the carbs. I don't notice anything wrong.

#2 Shows from back side.Again, everything looks good to me.

#3 shows where the idle adjustment screw stops. It's about 1/8" - 1/4" from the lever on the bar and does not touch it. It did before I disassembled, but only barely.

I can take more pics if needed.

Any suggestions???

You're not going all the time cause one or more of your slides are bottoming out--meaning it/they are actually going all the way down where they can't go any further before the idle screw ever makes contact.  You need to resync your slides in harmony with the idle screw.  Raise up all your slides, get them off the deck.  Get one of them set as a reference point.  If your lifting arms aren't all bent up then you can get one set where the adjusting nut has around 3 threads.  Showing at the top.  Then use the adjuster screw to get that slide to where you want it, if you are using the drill bit method, flashlight--whatever.  Now you will have one slide that is set and you should have some range to adjust the idle screw.  Next just set the other slides to the first one.
