78 750 Supersport Cam Chain Adjust WTF?
« on: September 27, 2012, 06:08:57 PM »
My 78 SS green hardcover Honda Shop Manual says adjust cam chain while running and idling which is contrary to the jillions of static cam chain adjustments on countless K models I've had the pleasure of playing w/. So, I tried it and it went RATTLE RATTLE like crazy while doing so and now I swear the motor is now making new funny rattling ticking noises upstairs (I also make funny thoughts upstairs, but thats another story). So, c'mon man,  WTF is going on? Is the new-fangled camchain dynamic adjustment a miss-print? Shouild I go back to the original, ancient cam chain adjusting techniques and do it static? Any opinions?

This has been discussed here before and the consensus was that static adjustment was best.

My personal theory is that Honda changed the procedure to simplify it in hopes that owners would adjust the timing chain at all since many owners probably never did it. ::)
Either that or Honda secretly wanted the timing chain to prematurely fail so they could sell a new bike.....  ;)
