IIIIII' mmmm Baaack,
  So, the hunny bunny demanded some time and attention, I thought that the 73 500 she told me to go and buy at an auction a few weeks back was just her way of saying " That was fun, now you should go work on that machine out in the barn". This, I firmly believe, I could be wrong, but I still believe it.
  Anyways, I went to the auction and paid $200 for this 500 with a little over 5000 miles with titled frame,had no tank or side covers and the engine is seized. It's a place to start.
   Took it home and poured the usual concoction down the cylinders and try to turn it over whenever I see it. That was a few weeks ago and it ain't a budgin .  This time, I'm going to leave the motor in frame and hang it buy the jugs. I usually take the motor out and hang it from the rafters over the bench, but there is already 4 motors hoggin up the bench. So this hanging with the extra weight of the frame providing some extra pull makes sense. I think.
   So this is the partially striped machine  as it is today. Kinda reminds me of that movie COMA.

I decided to run nylon strap through the cylinders this time, it's quicker,easier, and I have allot of them, they're cheap. Sewed the nylon through the cylinders and looped them over the frame, then cranked the whole machine upwards on a come-along. I'll let it hang till the weight of the cycle seperates the the jugs from the case.


If anyone was wondering how I got the cam off a seized engine, I cut the timing chain. Tried the bent 10mm open end once, it's just a waste of time, most engines  ( I've found) could use a new timing chain, especially since I'll be braking the cases apart anyways .

Dropped a shop rag down each cylinder and soaked up the fluid, propane torched the pistons ( not for long ),folded a shop rag and put a large 1/2 drive socket over each piston with the rag under it, hit the socket with an impact chisel in each hole( not for long , just a couple taps  each)   and viola', off she came. Much easier than monkeying around with a motor swinging off the rafters over the bench.



These pistons have not moved in these cylinders since 1982

This machine has been sitting since 1982. The pistons were frozen on the wrist pins in the position they stopped at when last run. Not real easy getting the keeps off the end of the wrist pins either. But, with a little PB , a little  heat(not much, just enough to expand it, not cook it) and an air chisel  with an 8mm socket on the end of it, the pins came out easy and with the added bonus of heat and the jarring of an air chisel, the stuck rings shook loose too. The 8mm socket needs to be replaced because it was softer than the pin, all the parts look good , no cracks breaks , or any other visible damage. And it only took an hour, wish I thought about this maybe 4 engines ago. Now ,it''s time to take the engine out of the craddle, split the cases and see whats what in the lower end.
   I have 4 other seized engines in craddles, and this is the way they'll be coming apart, saves time, effort, parts and general irritation.

  Stripped it down to frame, prep it for paint next. I have a good bottom end from another 500 that is ready for a top end it's been gone through and painted, ready to go. I think that this top end will be going on that , that should save a little time. Time is getting crucial with the coming of unpredictable colder weather.

CD, Good to see that you're back too. Have you had any luck with the machine shop?  I know things have been busy for you and the 550 had to go back burner for a while, does it look like you'll get a chance to play soon?
   This 500 came with no tank or side covers, as luck would have it , I have 3 f style tanks and 1 pair of side covers that I sanded  down and painted a week or so ago, it's a Nissan color, I think it's chili pepper red? Very red with metalflake, doesn't look anything like that Mercedes color with a french name that I shot on a 550 recently, that looks more like the old ox blood shoe polish my Grandad used. That color is done.
  Now that you mention it , there seems to be too many red machines here, must be time to look at some paint chips . The  Hundai color lime green is on 2 cycles and a spare tank, so that's done.The burnt orange is on 2, so that's done. White is hard to deal with and black is even worse.... I like Matt's 550 in blue.... Okay , I don't know.
   This machine is in fairly good overall condition, once you get past it's present condition, so I'm thinking of not straying far from stock , even though I really want to do a monoshock cafe or rat rod. That'll have to wait.

No extra money for the machine shop so just sitting and waiting on engine work.  In the meantime I brought the bike to my house to make it easier to work on.  Still have a long way to go but will have 6 weeks of off season coming, [plenty of time then]. 

I like the sound of the Nissan red bet it will look sharp.  That ox blood is a tough color, maybe a lighter color to break it up ?

Prep'ed the frame and shot it gloss black.
   Thought I had 4 500 ring sets on the shelf, one box is missing one ring, I broke one last 500 rebuild and forgot to replace it. 5 more sets on order , should be in by weeks end.  I bought extra rings and cam chain  for the next 500 engine while I was there.Hey, ya never know.  :)

The frame is a back together, front end is on, wiring is in , and the rear wheel is on. It's a roller. Everything going back on either gets paint or polish as I go, can't stand in front of the buffer for more than an hour at a rip, but there's other stuff to do.
  I could do some tire shopping, maybe some knobbies like Matt's project, not sure yet but it looks cool.

Checked for my rings today, not in yet. Can't seem to find the 500 seat in the shop for some reason but, during the search I did find 9 more sets of 500 rings that I forgot about sitting on the shelf right in front of my face.
   This getting a little older crap gets me nuts sometimes, I can be  fully engulfed in what I'm doing and then



I find I'm doing something else and the last thing wasn't even finished. That reminds me , I got to go and find that seat.

Nahhh, that's normal buddy that's just getting more and more things - the more things you accumulate the harder it is to keep track of it all.

 New rings are good after seeing that +500 point attack session that revealed the derusto rings. Also you can't spend too much time on one thing all at once, a break to something else is good and keeps one in shape.

Rb if you cant find the 500 seat I have a 1971 500 seat you can have pretty beat up and will need to be recovered but better than nothing. I swear I spend half my working time looking for the tool I just used 10 min ago.

Thanks Matt, but ,the seat was all in the finding, I put it on a chopper frame with the sidecovers and threw a moving blanket over them while I was shooting the frame, found it when I was checking out this red tank.

That's that Nissan red that I was talking about earlier.
  Didn't know the history on this 500 because I bought it at auction, looks like someone has been in that motor. It only has 5000 miles on it and the head was shot. Looks like the PO ran it with a blown head gasket for a while and waited too long to get repaired. The head gasket that I took out looked okay but the head over #1 was eaten away, no fix for that. As luck would have it, there was a decent extra 500 head on the shelf with 1/2 the valves missing, fortunately the valves in the crappy head were perfect and the switch took an hour but it's all good. Bolted it in, set the cam. I can finish it up tomorrow, maybe cradle it if there's time. :)

rb  The problem finding things couldn't be too many projects???  Nahhh that's not it!  Seriously I can barely keep track of one build and one runner I don't know how you keep track of all yours.  That Nissan red looks good.  Hows the Theater/Honda Museum  comin along?

The theater, sanded the paint off the entry and foyer last week then applied some epoxy paint. Rustoleum has a commercial use floor paint kit that has like 35 colors, all of them suck. Went with a tile red color of non kit rustoluem epoxy latex. it's been drying for a few days because it's chilly , I'll recoat this week ,poly coat once ,drop decorative paint chips in that and poly coat 2 more times with a non slip additive (looks like crushed glass) sprinkled on the suspect slippery areas. Leveled out and tiled the men and ladies rooms last week,then plopped in a few toilets. It's getting there.
   Got a chance to play with the 500 today, looked like this at noon

 and got a little further by 5

I may have done it a time or two, but when you like doing it and don't think of it as a chore, it really goes by too fast. I think that is why so many members here have multiple projects.
