Project idea... what do you think?
« on: October 02, 2012, 06:50:03 PM »
So, over the weekend, my family and I went to a local museum. One of the exhibits they had was a robots/steampunk exhibit. It got me to thinking that a Steampunk Cafe bike would be really cool. I did quick Google search and saw lots of cruisers and a bunch of boarder-line-Mad-Max bikes, but hardly any Steampunk Cafe's.

Of course, I'll need to get a bike to work on first, but I'm thinking a SOHC4 (obviously) with a cooper frame and black engine. Copper rims with black spokes. brown leather (vinyl) seat. Lots of silver and brass accents and rivets all over the place.

What do you all think? Here are a few pics that I found that have helped feed this latest fancy...

(For more pics of this one check it out on Do The Ton's site: http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=33668.140 or on the Honda Twins Site: http://www.hondatwins.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9896)

I don't draw much inspiration from this bike, but I keep coming back to it for some reason...

I see no simple modifications on any of these machines with the exception of the 350, you'll need the tools , the capital , the experience in manufacturing parts, antiques, and possible frame jig, welders.... your gonna have to have your game on.
I'll watch but, I think it could turn into a train wreck fast.
Waiting to see what happens next.

I think he was giving more examples of color schemes then building a complete on off bike. I could be wrong though

Yeah, I love the 350 and would love to be able to build a bike with that style. The others are just great for eye candy and inspiration.

That is a sweet little machine, and very doable for the guy who is a little more than handy. What cycle would you be using for this project?

I like the "idea" and the color scheme.  Jesse James did a copper tank with a power hammer and WWII riveter which looked awesome.  It was from the show with Kid Rock, maybe some more inspiration their.

I think I'm going to be ill.  :o
Some of those "bikes" need a Gucci handbag attached.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

I think you should go for it. The black motor idea is a good start, but I've always liked copper, stainless, brushed aluminum accents. It will make it pop instead of being covered in diamonds, or so subdued that its a black hole in the middle of the bike. I know of a place in Mass that sells bronze, and copper pieces for house hardware (door knobs, latches, pulleys) Simple things like antique speo, and tach hands shouldn't be too hard, you could go extreme of copper, bronze, or even gold plating.

I'm kinda liking that machine with the aircraft / airstream sidecar.  I wonder though, just how much fuel can you put in that frame? Maybe I'm too oldschool but I still like gas tanks.
Wonder how that aircraft engine makes the second bike handle? Choppers aren't known for nimble handling in the first place, then compounded with all those moving engine parts spinning around in a 2 foot circumference ,like a broken gyro, that ought to be an intense ride.

I can only imagine what it must be like to throw a leg over that beast and attempting to ride it. Riding a Boss Hoss was interesting enough, but with THAT engine?  :o

Kb02,
Does that 450 come with title? You are putting it on the road right?
I know a  member in NY that has an extra  72 450 and and a rolling 450 frame with dead motor and wiring harness, and he's looking to make room in the barn...... let me know if you get it and want parts

A title is not an issue in Vermont. The state will not title a motorcycle that is over 15 years old. Anything that 1996 or older does not require a title for registration. Only a bill of sale.  8)
