Can valve cover leak cause lean con...
« on: October 10, 2012, 07:30:11 PM »
Hello guys.

Can a valve cover leak cause lean condition?

Stock all the way around. Problem is when snaping the throttle it seems to take longer than normal to return to idle.

Any help that would be great.

I got this bike for $50. Pretty stoked. Got it running in one day. : )

No. Check for air leaks around the intake manifolds, carb boots, and exhaust leaks.

I patched up a bad leak on pipe 2 just before the collector.

So pipes are sealed. No major rust, nothing a little steel wool can't fix.

What about a cracked smog hose going to the air Box.

It's dark so I can't mess with it now. Looking for ideas.

What's the best way to look for leaks?

And no back fees. It's off the DMV records. And not registered stolen. So I can take my time on his one. : )

The breather hose wouldn't cause it either.

Spray WD-40 around the manifolds and boots. If the revs go up, it's got a leak.

You can look for leaks with starting fluid, Gumout spray, WD40 or a propane torch with the flame off of course. What you ar looking for a change in idle as yo spay one small part at a time.

Alsom under the rubber grip is a plastic sleeve that contacts the handlebar. The old grease dries out and dirt and crap builds up. You can clean that and lube it with Silicone or Teflon dry lubricant.

If the cables are old, as they wear little broken strands form whiskers that rub on the cable sheath. You can spray some lube in and if it improves it will be short term and you need new cables.

Maybe I missed it, but does the throttle have some play in it? Should be able to rotate the twist grip 1/16 of a turn, indicating some slop in the cable, which is what you want.

If no slop, you could get the symptom you describe. There are adjusters at each end of the cable.

Might have something to do with that massive air scoop on the front. Ingenious.

The ram air you are all joking about is an aux gas tank, aka funnel. The tank could use a good coating.

It's been raining and I haven't been able to work on the bike. I just got new press in jets in the mail. So as soon as I get it running god stock, I can make some changes.
