550 engine swap...
« on: October 16, 2012, 10:31:35 AM »
Hello,
my name is Adan and I'm new to the forum. I want to bring back to life my first motorcycle that died when the engine seized up due to lack of oil. It's a 1979 honda cb550 and I'm trying to find an engine ( I hear that if the engine seized up I'll need a trans too) but it's kind of hard to. Does anyone one know what other engine sizes/years will fit this frame? thanks a lot!

Welcome.

There is a bike salvage yard in south eastern MI. I can't remember the name or website right now, but that might be a good place to start.
The transmission is built into the engine cases on these bikes, so while replacing the engine you are also replacing the transmission. You do not need to get 2 separate parts.

There was not a '79 CB550. They were made until 1978, and in 1979 the CB650 came out to replace them.

You will need to verify what bike you have. As has been said they were last made in 78.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

yeah i think that's about 1.5 hours from Ypsi.

Adan, check craigslist.  right now is high season on people selling bikes and parts for winter projects at very good prices.  i know there are always tons of bikes and parts for sale in the Detroit area, and we get a good amount down here in Toledo.
