Another small update:

Got a call from my bead blaster and my engine cases and hubs are done. I'll be picking them up tomorrow afternoon.

Also got a call from Ken at CycleX and he says my work is moving along well. Crank was out of balance by 6g but now has a good of a balance as their drag bike crank does. Nice. Head and cylinders are blasted and resurfaced. He has new guides in but still needs to finish the valve job. He was just finishing boring/honing my cylinders as he called me. Should be done this week. Woo!

The good: Parts on the way! Also, this should be last major expenditures other than paint I hope.

The bad: How am I gonna pay for all this #$%*!? lol

My CC is on fire! Someone get an extinguisher!

Has David Silver commenced shipping from his US depot ? I see they are maintaining two separate web stores www.davidsilverspares.co.uk and www.davidsilverspares.com . Looks like they won't ship from the US to Europe, yet will the other way around ??

Have you put that fire out yet ?

Well I emailed and asked for a shipping quote when I was just considering rims and spokes and they do ship from the Europe to Canada.

I didn't realize there was a US store... guess I should have looked around a bit more. I might have just got owned on shipping.

Checked the .com website ... yep they definitely ship to Canada... OWNED!

IW have tried ServiceHonda.com ? They have the best prices I`ve found so far and reasonable shipping also. Everything I have checked against David Silvers prices were a good bit cheaper and so was the shipping. ........Gary

I have tried Service Honda. Although they have good prices their shipping to Canada is pretty outrageous. I will have to try the American David Silver Spares in the future.

Here is something I picked up today:

They masked and plugged all the holes as I asked. I more or less just assembled the cases with no internals and all the covers and had them mask and plug all blind threaded holes and any holes that led to the inside.

The glass beaded surface should accept paint very nicely.

All the nooks and crannies are clean and new again!

The bead blasted hardware should accept zinc very nicely.

Hubs looking nice as well.

Some cryptic markings that I'm not too sure what they mean.

I had them do both sides of the valve cover and breather cap. I hope it doesn't affect the sealing of the gasket.

I think the parts look really nice and I'm pretty stoked to paint them. I would actually just keep them this way if I knew it wouldn't oxidize like crazy. I really like the clean white/matte look. Would really make the chrome exhaust and chrome starter cover/ignition cover pop next to it I think.

I also recently discovered that my right hand control is from a 77-78 model. This explains why all the connectors were cut off and I found a section of bundled wires going to nothing inside the handle bars.... I really didn't want to mess around with customizing my brand new wiring harness so I ordered this today:

1 x   Bar Switch Assembly ~ Right (Brake) Side (12-0301)   US$69.95
1 x   Bar Switch Assembly ~ Left (Clutch) Side (12-0300)   US$69.95
1 x   Cable Adjuster (08-0067)   US$2.50
1 x   Right Angled Snap Ring Plier Set (35-0009)   US$14.95
1 x   Tire Lever - Fusil Type (35-0079)   US$9.95
1 x   Terminal Crimper Tool (35-0011)   US$28.00
1 x   Metric Terminal (12-0120)   US$2.00
1 x   Coupler Set (12-0634)   US$4.00
1 x   Metric Terminal (12-0121)   US$2.00
1 x   Metric Terminal Cover (12-0027)   US$2.00
1 x   Metric Terminal (12-0024)   US$2.00
1 x   Metric Terminal (12-0023)   US$2.00
1 x   Metric Terminal Cover (12-0019)   US$2.00
1 x   Metric Terminal Cover (12-0125)   US$3.00
1 x   Metric Terminal (12-0018)   US$2.00
1 x   Metric Terminal (12-0017)   US$2.00
1 x   Metric Terminal (12-0124)   US$3.95
1 x   Metric Terminal Cover (12-0022)   US$2.75
1 x   Metric Terminal Cover (12-0020)   US$2.00
1 x   Metric Terminal (12-0021)   US$2.75
    ---------
Sub-Total:   US$229.75
Free Shipping (FedEx Ground®):   US$0.00
5% PST #83590 8898 RT0001:   US$11.49
5% GST #83590 8898 RT0001:   US$11.49
Total:   US$252.73

I had planned on restoring my existing controls but knowing that at least one of them is not correct and I would have to hack up my wiring harness made me jump ship. If anyone needs a right hand control for a 77-78 let me know! lol And also I believe the left hand control fits 72-78 ... I think?

There is no backing out of this project now. ha

cases look great man! seeing that makes me smile because that VHT nu caast aluminum paint I have looks EXACTLY like those fresh cases. I just painted my front hub, caliper swingarm, and oil filter cover, and its almost 100% identical. it has the brightness to it that other engine silver paints I've seen here don't. I know you said you already have your paint but this was only $23 for two cans with shipping I believe.

Hey be CAREFUL when you try to remove those valve tappet covers if they were blasted while installed. I had a few stuck ones on my cover. I had to drill one out to remove it. The media can work its way into the threads and make it nearly impossible to remove the covers.

I'm thinking since my order was fairly large they were pretty motivated to get it done and get it billed to me. ha

But I really can't complain with their service at all. They called me when they received my package, gave me a couple updates along the way, and let me change my order a little bit during with no problems. I'm pretty happy. And although I spent a small fortune with them I actually got a lot of parts and work for the money.

Welcome to my murder room... lol ... looks like something from Dexter.

Well I got all my parts prepped for paint as well as all the plastic hung. Once again the taping took wwwwaaaayyyyy longer than you would imagine it would. I was first going to try and paint it all with the covers on but then my OCD kicked it and said that wasn't good enough. So I took all the covers off which means you have to tape the backside of each cover as well as each place that the cover was ...umm ...covering.

Tip: Lay your tape down so it covers the whole surface and then go around the edge with a mallet and gentle tap coming down on the corner. This will make a nice line for the tape to tear along.

Tip #2: Wipe everything down with varsol or some type of thinner to remove all the oils FIRST. I tried taping some things first but it didn't stick well in places because of residual oil.

I got shut down before I actually got to paint since I managed to give my gf a massive headache with the smell of the varsol... Even though I had the door closed and fan on exhaust on full. She is hyper-sensitive to smells like that which makes stuff like this pretty difficult for me sometimes. I may have to send her away for a couple hours tomorrow so I can spray some paint. The actually spraying shouldn't take too long now that all the prep work is done. I hope ...

Put that rear brake pedal on now while you still can. Once the engine is in place or you start putting more parts on you will hate yourself. If the arm gets in the way just pop it off. That spring will be a beast to manipulate with all the crap that gets in the way. I learned the hard way

After what seemed like an eternity of my parts just hanging there and my room all taped off like a murder room I finally got back at painting. Should be the last bit of painting I should have to do besides my gauges.

Don't I look ravishing (or crazy?) in my safety gear.

Parts have been hanging like this for almost a week.

Coat 1...hard to even tell the difference. This is good. It means that the duplicolor is a close match for the natural clean color of the aluminum.

This piece seemed to go on with a bit of "hammered" look but seemed to smooth out with more coats.

Coat 2.

Startin to get a nice finish.

Some imperfections but those were in the base metal itself.

An ever so slightly textured finish that is exaggerated by the flash.

While waiting for parts to dry lets check out some parts from vintagecb750.com. A bunch of connectors to fix up my electrical, the proper cirmping tool (I looked at buying a die for my existing crimper and it was actually more money?), some long snap ring pliers for the master cylinder rebuild, another tire iron, and brand new repro controls.

Not quite the right anodized look but I'm OK with it since I was going to repaint my old ones anyway. I found out my right hand control was from a 77-78 750 and that is why my wiring harness was so hacked up. I wasn't about to hack up my brand new harness so I just broke down and bought new ones.

Looks like I'll have a pair of original controls for sale soon. lol

Coat 3 finished.

Wait an hour for the parts to dry enough to be able to move them. This paint actually seems to dry to the touch quite quickly. Painting in the condo with the low humidity of winter probably helps too.

The results.

As I said previously, the hammered look mostly smoothed itself out. Quite pleased with the results.

Batch 2 ready to go.

Coat 1 looked like sh!t. It seemed to come out in blobs. WTF? This was a different can btw.

It left a texture on everything.

I thought it might that with the fan on the room was starting to cool down quick so I put the cans in some warm water. However, it kept coming out in blobs. ARG! I even tried a different nozzle. Finally I tried a different can entirely and it worked fine. Conclusion: don't try to save a sh!tty can of spray paint. Some are just bad! Don't be cheap and throw the f*cker out.

Fortunately coat 3 with the properly working can seemed to smooth out the imperfections.

I didn't spend much time prepping the starting so it wasn't perfect but seeing as it will be under a chrome cover I'm not too worried about it. lol

Pretty glad to get this step done. Feels like now that pretty much all the parts I need are on the way all that is left is pretty much just reassembly ... and lots of it!

I'm glad that the paint turned out well. It is a close match to the true color of clean blasted aluminum and I think it will be a nice low maintenance solution. It should also make the chrome bits pop really nicely as well.

Iron. Great job painting! It all looks GREAT! Really makes me want to just paint my whole engine and not mess around with the polishing game. Definitely leaning that way but I want to see yours all assembled. Get to work! Haha can't wait for more updates. I am at a crossroads whether to take my engine apart or not. Never done any of this before and it DID run before year down, I just don't know if I should try and tackle this or if it would set me back more than I need it to now. Decisions decisions.

Thanks!

Ya I think I'm making the right choice by painting it all ... and even if I change my mind later there is always a winter or two or three down the road that I can choose to go buck wild on the polishing if needed. It's not like it's irreversible.

My engine was running pretty well when I took mine apart though lacking some top end it seemed. I found a broken ring on #2 piston so I'm pretty happy I decided to go all the way and rebuild it. However, it has added *significant* expense to the build. Roughly half the cost of my bike restoration is in the engine. So just consider that.

If you want to go for it anyway, that's cool too. There are tons of guys on this forum doing the same thing and lots more with a huge amount of knowledge that will help out.
