I'd like to gather some thoughts from a few people about K&N air filters. From what I can gather they are more free flowing but don't trap particles as well as the OEM paper type. My bike seems to be running a bit rich at WOT right now and opening up the intake a bit would probably lean it out some which would probably help in my case.

Please don't let this go south as some old air filter threads that I dug up have...  :o

IW I bought a K&N filter for my air box. Leaned it out too much and it stuttered from 1/8 to -1/4 throttle (prime cruising positions) so it was unusable. I was taking the bike on vacation 70 miles away and did not want to mess with tuning before the trip. When I get back ill put it back in and see what I need to adjust. Probably need to raise my needle up one and screw the idle screws in a hair.

Hmmm, good to know. I think my bike is still rich on the main jet ... which seems surprising to me since I'm at 105 mains. I will maybe try a new paper type air filter since I have one sitting around... though the old one hasn't really seen much use so I doubt it will change anything.

And SF, thanks for the SF but I'm looking to keep the stock look. Thanks!

Didn't Hondaman advocate the use of the Unifilter in the stock box to help the CB550?
Should be in the Hondaman collection in the Tips section.

Well I was going to wait to put the emblems on in case I end up having to redo the tank again... but I couldn't wait any longer. The covers looked so pretty just sitting there.

I kinda wanted the color choice to be a surprise for you guys and reveal it all at once ... but as they say... "The best laid plans..."

I was having trouble capturing the true color of the covers. The sun was shining in and the glare was really throwing the camera off. They are a deeper more candy red than this... and you can see some of the metallic in the glare.

This is closer to their actual color.

This is more what they look like in person. A deep candied red.

Of course now I had to throw the badges on!

I actually had to sand down the inside of the covers to get the badges to fit ... I blame the cheap repro emblems though. I think the posts were just too short.

Not sure if I want to throw these on with my rat tank. lol

Don't do it!  Give us a nice side-by-side before (rat tank and no covers) and after (all the pretty bits) comparo pic.  For effect, y'know?  I love freshly painted parts, the way they look as if they're still wet.

Now that you're almost done, I'm going to have to go find a new build thread to folllow.  Unless you start a new project, that is.  You ARE going to resurrect another bike, aren't you?

The side covers look really nice. Whats the status with the meesed paint on the tanks? Are you concerned that the repainted candy color on the tank will match the side covers? I know when I used to custom paint back in the day I would worry about trying to match a candy color . The depth of the color is controlled by many factors. How the base is prepared, how the candy is thinned, how many coats of candy are applied and to come extent the amount of clear coat. Good luck and I hope it works out for you...........gary

Ya, that's what I was thinking. Throw all the tins on at the same time for the "  8) " factor. lol

Now that you mention it, my cousin and I are thinking about doing some clean up/re-seal work to his CB500 this winter. It wouldn't be as thorough of a project as mine but could make for some interesting pics regardless.

Well they told me to take the side covers with me... so either he is not concerned with it or he didn't think of that. I have this feeling deep in my gut that I may be having my tank redone at some point.

I have decided though that if the paint work they come up with is at least half way decent then I'm just gonna say screw it and run it. If it's not up to my standards then I'm going to have it re-done this winter at a time when I am less stressed about it. This whole paint job thing is so stressful and I just can't make myself think about it anymore.

Went for a lovely 40mile ride. Up to 280 miles total now since the rebuild. Dodged some rain clouds and get the bike a bit muddy unfortunately... oh well. It was a nice ride.  8)

been following. an absolute bummer man. you seem to have the patience of Gandhi. truly sorry to hear all the trouble. the side covers look like a peach man. glad to hear you're putting miles on it. I have almost put 500 miles on mine now! I am in absolute love with my bike and I hope you will be too!

Thanks guys!  ;D I'm definitely in love with her. I was before the rebuild but now the bond is even stronger!

As far as having a lot of patience ... well I was doing a lot of raging and making angry calls and stressing about it ... but I was actually losing sleep over it and it was making me very unhappy and distracted in everything else I do in life. I just made a decision that I'm not going to worry about it since I at least have a bike that I can ride right now. It may be ugly now but I know with a quick change of the tins she'll be an eye catcher!

Soon... ::)

I was in a wedding party this weekend so didn't get any riding in until 2nite. Got out for a quick 20 miles or so ...and managed to get a cop to flash his lights at me... oops!  ;D Didn't chase me down though so that's good.

I'm up to 25,520 miles now which is 300 miles since the rebuild. 150 miles since my last oil change so I changed the oil again. The oil was MUCH cleaner this time and the amount of metal particulate was much less as well. I think my rings must be pretty close to broken in but I'll change the oil one more time in 200 more miles or 500 miles total.

I also:
-Checked valve clearances (found a couple had opened up about .001" so I brought everything back to .004")
-Tensioned the cam chain
-Adjusted the clutch again

The valve adjustment and cam chain tension really seemed to quiet it down at idle. Smooth as can be.

Tomorrow I plan to try and get out and do some plug chops and re-jetting ... weather permitting.

Resync of carbs can sometimes quiet a motor as well.
Do you know how much over you were when the cop flashed his lights?
Definitely don't run, not worth the misery it would cause.

Glad ride was good and you hopefully had a good time at the wedding.
Continue keeping tabs on it and its wear.

Today I took a run out to a place where this a nice long hill I could use to do WOT plug chops and it's steep enough to keep the speed down. It's about a 30mile ride out. It's a beautiful day to ride but wayyyy hot to be sitting on the side of the road in full gear and working on a hot bike.

All the supplies I really needed: 8mm wrench, flat screwdriver, pliers (in case you can't get the bowl clip snapped back on), marker for marking which plug is from what, a little cup to pour the fuel into from the bowls, some rags, and 4 fresh D8EA plugs gapped to .024-.025".

I pulled one of my iridiums when I got there just to see what my cruising mixutre was like (3/4 throttle ish). I run Iridium plugs regularly.

Made a "practice" run on the Iridiums to see where to pull off and what my speeds would be like. With the hill I never got above 80mph or so.

Nice little spot to pull off.

The Iridium after a WOT run up the hill.

Then I rode to the bottom of the hill, switched the fresh D8EA into #1 and made another WOT run back up.

Looks sparkling clean and white.... uh oh!

I thought maybe I just hadn't held WOT long enough to get a reading so I threw the iridium back in and rode to the bottom of the hill to make another run on that same plug.

Didn't really change it at all.

Hmmmm ... so at this point I was a bit confused. I was thinking the bike was, if anything, a touch rich as I could hear it burble and bog near WOT. The engine sound really changes and if I let off and ease back into it, it actually accelerates better. I think that is an indication of rich. BUT I went with what the plugs were telling me. I threw in 108s instead of my 105s and made another pass up the hill. I didn't even do a plug chop, I could tell the bogging was much worse. I could feel it actually decelerating if I held it WOT and start to die off. If I eased off the throttle and slowly turned in it would accelerate better.

Soooo... at this point I kind of abandoned plug chops. Seems like they weren't giving me correct readings... or I was doing something wrong.

I changed back to 102 mains instead as my gut initially told me I should and the bogging is pretty much completely gone. I don't really want to lean it out anymore though without knowing what my mixture actually is. Running lean can be  very damaging. However, my chrome pipes don't have any tinge of color change so I think that is a good indicator that the combustion temps aren't too crazy hot yet. I think I may have to book a dyno session later this summer to confirm my mixture but for right now the bike feels like it's pretty happy.

When I got home I cut the threads off the plug to reveal a clean white electrode.

Maybe an ever so slight tinge of coloring that goes about 2/3 of the way up the electrode but that's it. Maybe that faint line is what I'm looking for? I dunno.

The hill is about 1/2 a mile long and I thought that would be long enough to get a good reading. Any thoughts on that?

Ken at Cycle X did mention that he didn't really like using plug chops for tuning. He said you just need to *feel* how the bike is running. It will tell you when it's happiest. I think I have done that pretty well.

Anyway, the bike runs very well now. No fuel leaks if I don't leave the fuel on while its sitting and no oil leaks. The tach is a bit bouncy and the front caliper may have an ever so slight seep to it yet but overall it's great and very rideable. It seems to really love to cruise at about 75mph.

I'm up to 370miles on the rebuild now. Woot! I'll do another oil change at 500 miles total and then I think I might let it rev out! I'm itching to hear it scream!

wow, not at all what I was expecting. I have yet to do my plug chops, but after each ride I check my plug color to see where I am at under normal operations. I rarely ever go WOT, although I found a HUGE bridge 20 miles away (the one I go over to get to work) and there is a private island with my hotel on the other side so I can pull off safely and check. grade is pretty steep, it wont let me go over 65mph WOT in 5th. I am hoping mine yields colored results. weather still isnt cooperating but I'll get it eventually.

that tank cracks me up! I am going to be doing something similar soon. I am going to reclear my tank because of some orange peel and runs I didnt see before. I still have my top dented raw tank, so I need to clean it out....my bike is going to look hideous until that paint is done ;)

any ETA on your tank?

Last I heard is the shop was waiting for another decal set to be made. I've stopped fussing over it. I think all my hair would fall out if I was stressing about it like I was before.

I'm pretty confident that my mixture is pretty damn close. The bike runs really well. I can't wait to open er up!!

I filled up at Esso instead of Shell so maybe there was some ethanol in the fuel blend and that could be what's giving me the false readings. Or maybe the hill just isn't long enough.
