$120 Ebay 600cc '78 CB550k
« on: October 26, 2012, 07:29:23 PM »
Hey guys. I saw a thread a few weeks ago talking about the $120 600cc overbore kit, there was a lot of talking and everyone just couldn't decide if it was good or not.

I decided to jump on it and buy the kit. So without further adu, here it is:

A yellow packing envelope came in the mail direct from japan and had this row of white boxes.

Inside we find this:

The head gasket came inside a plastic bag sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard.

You can decide for yourself what you think. I'm going to take it to the machine shop this week and get it bored/honed.
It's almost twice as old as me, I don't know how the hell it works!

Let us know how it goes....I've been curious about this myself. Somebody mentioned that you're getting pretty thin on the cylinder liners with this size.
Let us know how the quality is and, after it's running, how it holds up.

If you can measure at the base of one skirt perpendicular to the pin and let us know if it's actually 61.5mm.

The general consensus it Yes, they are good.  HondaMan likes 'em, and has used them in a few motor rebuilds, and they've held up after thousands of miles.  I think the only issue with this kit specifically was the sleeve width after boring.  I showed the CB500 .5mm over pistons to my dad's shop partner, and he was thoroughly impressed, especially for the price.

I was wondering if you were able to do this yet.

I measured 60.95 mickeys at the skirt.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.

Interested to see how this develops.  Planning on picking up a cb550 since my cb750 is done now and I need a winter build.  :-)

Have you had a chance to install and run the new pistons? I have the same set and I am midway to getting them installed. Would love to hear any feedback.

These are "cruzinimage" kits?  I got a set of their 436 pistons that I might never get to using. They look nice but I haven't mic'd them.

I heard a story that is out on the web somewhere of a guy that had their stuff blow up on first startup. I don't think it was a honda and not sure where to find the post.

Hey there!

Got the 61.5mm kit from japspares on eBay for my 77 CB550K,

Just bought to get my cylinders bored and honed, any tips or tricks that you can recall from this process? How have the pistons held up so far, just wanted to double check that 61.5mm is within limits to bore to on a stock cylinder for 77 CB550,

Thanks in advance!

Holy dead thread batman! I have had these pistons in my bike for the better part of 4 years/8000 miles. My bike is still running like a champ, as I recall my biggest hurdle was tuning the carbs. After a year of screwing with the stock ones I went with some modern flat side carbs and tuning was a breeze. I have not had to have the head off and It still makes very good power.
